Why John Calipari landing another 5-star Davion Thompson matters for Arkansas basketball

Five-star guard Davion Thompson provides John Calipari with yet another significant recruiting win as the Razorbacks continue to build one of college basketball's most talented futures.

John Calipari, without question, is one of the best coaches in history, and when his career is over as the Arkansas basketball head coach, for which Razorback Nation does not desire it to be soon, it will be his ability to recruit the most elite players that will be the chief reason for his nearly incomparable success. Although he recruits the most elite players at every position, he is rightfully lauded most for landing the best guards in the nation.

Calipari has built his own pipeline for guards to enter the NBA and excel once selected. All one needs to do is look at current NBA guards like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Devin Booker, and De'Aaron Fox, all among the league's top guards, to know he knows how to develop guards into not only superior college basketball players but also excellent NBA guards. The 2026 NBA Draft will feature two guards he has coached who will inevitably join the elite guard ranks of Gilgeous-Alexander, Booker, and Fox: Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas.

Therefore, no matter where John Calipari is coaching, including at Arkansas, guards are eager to join his team, given his unrivaled track record of developing elite guards into successful NBA players. Even though Dusty May's Michigan team won last season's national championship, he, like so many others over the past two decades, learned that Calipari is challenging to beat in recruiting, no matter one's accomplishments, including just winning the national championship.

Specifically, May passionately pursued five-star guard Davion Thompson, but the Hogs' head basketball coach denied him, as Thompson chose to embark on the challenge of becoming one of Calipari's next great guards to land in the NBA and flourish there. Baylor and Vanderbilt, the two other finalists, lost the recruiting battle to the Razorbacks as well.

Davion Thompson gives Arkansas basketball another scorer

One thing is certain for Arkansas basketball in the upcoming 2026-2027 college basketball season: the Hogs will not lack depth in elite talent in the backcourt. The Razorbacks will have guards coming off the bench who are better than most teams' starting guards. Last season, teams made a concerted effort to riddle Thomas and Acuff Jr. with foul trouble, which would significantly reduce the quality of the team's talented backcourt if either or both had to sit.

With the elite depth at the guard position the Razorbacks have, such a strategy would be pointless, given that Calipari can run in elite guard after elite guard, for he truly has an embarrassment of riches at the position. Although Thompson is part of the Arkansas basketball 2027 recruiting class, the No. 8 guard and No. 27 player in the class, according to ESPN, he is likely to reclassify to join the 2026-2027 team, and that decision is forthcoming later this summer. If this happens, this will strengthen the Hogs' chances of winning a national championship.

Thompson is a talented scorer who has proven he can average 21.7 points per game and as high as 26.3 points per game. He can combine with the excellent scoring prowess of Jeremiah Wilkinson, who averaged 17.4 points per game last season, to generate robust production in the backcourt. Similar to Wilkinson, Thompson is a balanced scorer who does not need support to make baskets and can elevate his teammates' games as a quality distributor.

Final Thoughts

With Billy Richmond III returning for the 2026-2027 season, Calipari will look for him to take his game to the next level in every area, including scoring. Last season, Richmond averaged 11.2 points per game, as his head coach constantly encouraged him to trust his ability to make shots. Razorback Nation should expect to see Richmond improve significantly as a scorer, which will make the Hogs increasingly more dangerous.

Richmond, Wilkinson, and Thompson can emerge as a powerful offensive force for the Razorbacks if Thompson reclassifies to join the team for the upcoming 2026-2027 college basketball season. With the addition of Thompson, Calipari continues to make moves that position Arkansas to be one of the best teams in the nation, especially considering he has the No. 1 recruiting class for the 2026-2027 season.
