In his first two seasons as Arkansas basketball head coach, John Calipari has proved his naysayers wrong, as in his first season, his team was one shot away from making it to the Elite 8, and last season, the Razorbacks won their first SEC Basketball Tournament championship since 2000 and went to the Sweet 16.
Those naysayers disingenuously contend that he cannot coach. However, Razorback Nation begs to differ, as he has made Arkansas basketball an even more legitimate threat to win a national championship. For a coach who can no longer coach, he must be one lucky individual to help his team make it to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at Arkansas.
To claim that Calipari cannot recruit is ludicrous, to be as kind as possible. Last season, he assembled some of the country's best talent, led by Darius Acuff Jr., who is expected to hear his name called during the first five picks of the 2026 NBA Draft. Although he has done an excellent job of recruiting in his first two seasons, Calipari's 2026 recruiting class is No. 1 in the nation, making it his best recruiting class as Arkansas basketball head coach.
After Billy Richmond III announced he was withdrawing from the NBA Draft and returning to Arkansas, Razorback Nation hoped that this would strengthen the possibility of Meleek Thomas returning to Arkansas for at least one more season. Unfortunately, for Razorback Nation, Thomas decided to remain in the NBA Draft to continue pursuing his NBA hoop dreams and dramatically improve his life and his family's. If he had returned to the Hogs for at least one more season, he could have significantly increased his value and landed much higher than where he will in the upcoming draft.
John Calipari praises Meleek Thomas on NBA Draft decision
When most college basketball coaches devote considerable time to attempting to persuade a player to return to their teams instead of committing to the NBA, they simply move on to his replacement, with little to no additional words or actions for him. Such is not the case for Calipari. He invests in his players while they are on his team and beyond. Therefore, for those who really know him, they were not surprised by how supportive he was of Thomas' decision to remain in the draft.
Calipari stated, "I am really excited about Billy coming back and his mentality of let’s do something special. Which is what he talked to me about. I am also excited for Meleek who has had great workouts and great interviews. But so has Trevon and Darius. I think all three will be drafted in a better slot than people are projecting today! You know I will be on the phone working for all of them and I cannot wait to watch their paths!"

A typical college basketball head coach would have mentioned that Thomas has several areas he needs to improve, which is why he hoped he would return for another season. Calipari loves his players. He wants what is best for them. Even though he wished Thomas had returned, he knows how talented he is and wants him to go be great in the NBA. Calipari used X/Twitter as a vehicle to begin advocating for Thomas to land the best possible pick.
Recruits, including elite recruits, observed how he handled Thomas' decision, and, as current and so many former players communicate, they see Calipari as more than a traditional coach, for he operates with the love of a father. Not enough focus has been placed on this organic and powerful asset he possesses, though the Razorbacks will certainly benefit from it as long as Calipari is their head coach.
