Razorback fans, strap in: 2026 could be a bumpy ride.
As first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield adapts to the rigors of the SEC, the Arkansas football team finds itself in the unenviable position of welcoming its fourth HC of the last nine years. However, to make matters worse, Silverfield's comments at SEC Media Day revealed that Hogs fans will have to deal with uncertainty at the team's most important position -- quarterback -- for at least another month.
Ryan Silverfield expects QB battle to continue into late August
The Arkansas Razorbacks weren't the hottest ticket at SEC Media Days after finishing 2025 winless in conference play, but that doesn't mean plenty of eyes weren't on first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield when he took the podium on Thursday morning.
The former Memphis Tigers head coach had plenty to say in his first-ever appearance at SEC Media Days, and in his opening speech, he touched on the Razorbacks' biggest question mark heading into his inaugural season on the Hill. Regarding the quarterback battle unfolding in Fayetteville, Ryan Silverfield said:
"Obviously, the question is about the quarterback battle. I have great faith in the two guys that are competing for that starting job. As it sits today, KJ Jackson and AJ Hill are both very intelligent, both are very hardworking, [and] both have the skill set to lead us to a bunch of SEC wins and compete at the highest level.Arkansas Head Coach Ryan Silverfield
People keep saying, 'When will a decision be made?' Listen, they're going to continue to battle through OTAs and then training camp. We'll look up at the end of August and see where it sits.
But I'm very pleased with the way each one of those guys is progressing, and I'm looking forward to seeing them continue to try and lead our offense."
Coach Silverfield's speech gave a reasonable timeline for KJ Jackson and AJ Hill's position battle, and it offered a level of transparency that many fans will appreciate. That said, these comments can't inspire confidence among the Razorback faithful.
As many experts have pointed out over the years, having two quarterbacks is the same as having none. While the rest of the Hogs' roster has been quiet about its thoughts on Jackson and Hill's performance, the closer their position battle is, the harder it will be to commit to one when Sept. 5 rolls around.
Arkansas desperately needs a leader under center
It's been almost 10 months since Sam Pittman was fired, and the Arkansas Razorbacks aren't any closer to naming their QB of the future. If the team wants to climb its way out of the basement of SEC football, Coach Silverfield and the Hogs will need something to rally around at the quarterback position.
As exciting as the running back tandem of Braylen Russell and Sutton Smith is, the Razorbacks have repeatedly proven over the years that a strong running attack isn't enough to compete with the SEC's best teams on a weekly basis. If backfields consisting of Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis or Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams weren't enough to put Arkansas in the upper echelon of SEC play, then it will almost certainly take a complementary star at the QB position to get Coach Silverfield where he wants to be.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the path Arkansas football is on for 2026. KJ Jackson has performed fairly well in the limited snaps that he's received over the past two seasons (37-for-58, 500 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT), but he's far from a proven commodity. AJ Hill looked even more raw in his two collegiate appearances (19-for-32, 223 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), making Arkansas' QB room an absolute toss-up heading into August.
That does not mean Jackson or Hill can't become the answer. Both players were 4-star prospects coming out of high school, and both have enough talent to make the competition interesting. However, belief is no substitute for certainty, and Arkansas has very little certainty at the QB position right now. For a team with a brutal schedule, a first-year head coach, and nearly 80 new players, that is a dangerous place to be.
For now, Arkansas fans will have to sit and wait as the clock ticks down on the Razorbacks' quarterback battle. Whoever Ryan Silverfield ultimately decides to start this fall, he'll inherit one of the toughest jobs in the SEC.
