Arkansas football's 2026 SEC Media Day has officially come and gone, giving Razorback fans a glimpse of what to expect from head coach Ryan Silverfield in his first year with the Hogs.
Between Silverfield laying out his vision for the program, Caden Kitler revealing a new offseason competition, Quincy Rhodes and Sutton Smith defending their new head coach, and the quarterback battle remaining unresolved, there was no shortage of material for Arkansas fans to digest.
Ryan Silverfield is bringing Memphis football to Fayetteville
Coach Silverfield didn't shy away from his Memphis connections during the head coach's appearance at the 2026 SEC Media Day. The first-year SEC coach is joining the Hogs after six years at the University of Memphis, so it only makes sense that he'd draw upon his experience with the program as he preps for the upcoming season -- still, it was a bit surprising to hear just how often the Tigers came up during his introductory press conference.
Whether it was Silverfield's preexisting connections to offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey and defensive coordinator Ron Roberts (Cramsey coached at Memphis, Roberts was interviewed for the school's DC job) or his recruitment of players like Quincy Rhodes while at Memphis, Ryan Silverfield's previous coaching stop came up early and often. So, any Razorback fans who want to know more about the team's head coach would be wise to check out his team's film from last year.
War on the Hill
Center Caden Kitler started 11 games for the Arkansas Razorbacks a year ago, making him one of the few returning players from the Hogs' 2025 roster. During his appearance at the 2026 SEC Media Day, Kitler revealed an interesting part of the Hogs' offseason program, which he referred to as "War on the Hill."
According to Caden Kitler, the Razorbacks have been split into multi-position offseason groups that compete with one another, giving the Hogs an opportunity to build chemistry as a team ahead of their on-field debut in the fall. Offseason teams aren't a new idea by any means, but they're a great team-building idea for a roster with nearly 80 new players. Hopefully, "War on the Hill" becomes a legitimate culture-builder for a team that desperately needs to come together quickly.
Out with the old, in with the new
Arkansas is entering its first year under a new head coach since Sam Pittman was hired in 2019, so the 2026 SEC Media Day was going to be one of new HC Ryan Silverfield's first opportunities to express how his approach is different from the previous regime. Safe to say, the former Memphis Tigers coach didn't shy away from his criticism of how the team was being conducted during Sam Pittman's coaching tenure.
From fundraising and in-state recruiting to the literal lighting inside team facilities, Silverfield wasn't afraid to criticize the Arkansas Razorbacks of yesteryear during his appearance at the SEC Media Day. Additionally, the first-year head coach also pointed out the lack of effort and number of mental mistakes he saw on film -- all issues that drove Razorback fans mad a year ago.

Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield was destined to face an uphill battle the moment he signed a contract with the Razorbacks, but even he couldn't have anticipated just how personal criticism would get ahead of his first season. More specifically, he has to be surprised by the fact that he has been accused of having zero aura by college football fans around the country.
Thankfully, it seems as though the Arkansas football team has its coach's back. Defensive end Quincy Rhodes, center Caden Kitler, and running back Sutton Smith all spoke highly of their head coach, with Smith even saying, "[People] are tripping; he's got aura. He's got swag, just like me." It will take significantly more than aura to win in the SEC, but it's great to see the team going to bat for Silverfield as he tries to assert himself in a new conference.
Arkansas' quarterback battle will continue into late August
No comment from Arkansas' SEC Media Day was more of a head-turner than Coach Silverfield's thoughts on the Razorbacks' quarterback battle. Fans have been waiting with bated breath to see who will be Arkansas' next starting QB, and according to Silverfield, they'll have to keep waiting until at least late August to learn who will be taking snaps under center this fall.
Sophomore KJ Jackson and incoming freshman transfer AJ Hill are currently competing for the Razorbacks' starting QB job, and as of right now, neither player has taken a definitive lead. Both were 4-star prospects coming out of high school, so there is clearly plenty of potential between the two of them, regardless of who starts. That said, it remains to be seen whether Jackson's experience as a Razorback or Hill's familiarity with Coach Silverfield wins out in the fall, making quarterback the biggest unresolved storyline of Arkansas' preseason.
