As promised, Miikka Muurinen, a five-star power forward from Finland, announced on April 27, 2026, at 9 a.m. CT, the team he decided to join, as Arkansas basketball was the clear frontrunner before his announcement. LSU, Indiana, Kentucky, and North Carolina were also vying for Muurinen to select them. In this NIL and transfer portal era, no matter how much a team appears to be the frontrunner for a player, it can never be certain that the athlete will ultimately choose to join it. Razorback Nation, therefore, was excited and relieved to learn Muurinen's official decision to become a Hog.
Under John Calipari's leadership, Arkansas has reached the Sweet 16 in the past two seasons and won its first SEC Tournament Championship since 2000. However, when the Razorbacks faced the Arizona Wildcats in last season's Sweet 16, they lacked the size and physicality necessary to defeat such a team, as the Wildcats crushed the Hogs 109-88.
Given that the Hogs have lost the size and physicality they had in Trevon Brazile, who has exhausted his college basketball eligibility, and in Karter Knox and Malique Ewin to the transfer portal, Arkansas fans were eager to hear great news about landing the size and athleticism that Muurinen brings to the Razorbacks. His ability to shoot well from behind the arc will pose significant challenges for opposing teams' frontcourts, as most big men do not want to defend the arc, leaving the inside vulnerable to easy scoring opportunities. Therefore, his ability to stretch defenses will be a valuable asset.
Immediately after Muurinen announced he would join the Arkansas basketball team, fans and media personalities across Arkansas and the nation shared passionate responses on social media, especially on X/Twitter, as the announcement is more than just huge news for Arkansas and the SEC but also for all of college basketball.

D.J. Williams, a former outstanding Arkansas football tight end, contemplated whether Muurinen's arrival in Fayetteville will lead to the Razorbacks reaching the Final Four.
Do you think the pieces are starting to fall in place for a Final Four run next year? Or do you think that relying on youth will keep the Razorbacks from going far in the tournament? ( JJ 18yrs old, Jordan Smith 18yrs old, Abdou Toure 18yrs old, Mikka 19yrs old ) pic.twitter.com/TXhs3BceTN
