What is Arkansas Basketball's Best Rivalry?

Over the past few decades, the Arkansas Razorbacks have been one of the best basketball programs in the country. From Nolan Richardson's national championship run in 1994 to more recent successes under head coaches like Eric Musselman and John Calipari, the Razorbacks have routinely competed with the best that the country has to offer, spawning dozens of memorable games in the process.

However, while Hogs basketball has often been a bright spot for the University of Arkansas, it lacks one thing: a clear rivalry.

Arkansas Basketball has lacked a true rival since joining the SEC

Looking at the state of Razorback basketball in 2026, it's hard to even remember an era when the program had a bona fide rivalry. While contests with SEC opponents like LSU have always carried a little extra significance, the basketball side of the Golden Boot rivalry has never been nearly as intense as its football counterpart.

To find an era when the Hogs had a true, clear-cut rival on the court, you have to go all the way back to the days of the Southwest Conference when teams like Texas, Texas A&M, and, to a lesser degree, Baylor were playing on a regular basis. For decades, these teams duked it out on the court, with the Hogs playing hundreds of games between the three Texas powerhouses. However, while the Razorbacks have since reunited with Texas and Texas A&M following their addition to the SEC, it feels like a lifetime ago that they were defining rivalries in basketball.

Some of this effect can be attributed to the sheer intensity of SEC football. Rivalries define the SEC gridiron, and in the case of the Arkansas Razorbacks, they've got legitimate rivalries with a handful of different universities that dwarf their basketball team's respective feuds in terms of sheer intensity. It's a trend seen across the conference, with virtually every SEC school featuring more noteworthy rivalries in football than any other sport.

That said, there is one rivalry that has started to challenge this long-standing trend, and it directly involves the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Kentucky takes the cake as Arkansas Basketball's biggest modern rival

John Calipari's arrival in Fayetteville signaled a major shift in the SEC basketball landscape. The future Hall of Fame coach was the face of Kentucky basketball for 15 years, so seeing him at a different school -- and one in the same conference, no less -- was a shock to all.

Kentucky fans weren't necessarily high on Calipari when he left, either. The coach's long list of highly-touted recruiting classes only resulted in one national championship for the Wildcats, and considering this championship occurred back in 2012, it's safe to say Kentucky fans had grown restless by the time his tenure came to an end.

Now, John Calipari has reinvigorated his career with a change of scenery. After immediately giving Arkansas national relevance in his first season, the Razorbacks kept building in 2025-26 with an SEC Title and trip to the Sweet Sixteen, and they're entering the 2026 season with one of the most stacked recruiting classes in recent memory -- a familiar story for Kentucky fans.

John Calipari's squads were often the measuring stick for the Arkansas Razorbacks in the 2010s, with some of the most memorable victories in Razorback history coming against high-ranking Kentucky teams that looked like national-title contenders.

Kentucky leads the all-time series by a wide margin (37-15), but Arkansas has produced some unforgettable moments against the Wildcats, including wins at Rupp Arena, Bud Walton Arena classics, and several SEC Tournament battles. The Hogs have not beaten Kentucky as often as fans would like, but when they do, it feels bigger than almost any other regular-season win.

Arkansas-Kentucky is the SEC's next great basketball rivalry

To be fair, Kentucky-Tennessee is probably the SEC's best pure basketball rivalry, while Alabama-Auburn has become the conference's hottest in-state battle. Arkansas-Kentucky is not quite on the level of either of these rivals historically, but it has an incredible X-factor thanks to the Calipari effect.

With John Calipari on the sideline, the national media will care every time that Arkansas and Kentucky meet on the court, especially if both programs are ranked. If Arkansas continues recruiting at a Kentucky-like level, the rivalry will only get nastier.

For these reasons, Kentucky is Arkansas basketball's best modern rivalry in 2026. It may not have the deepest history, but compared to the Hogs' other rivalries, it's by far the most intense.
