Anyone expecting Taylen Green’s impressive start to the 2025 season to take a step back when the Arkansas Razorbacks opened Southeastern Conference play at Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford over the weekend miscalculated. Green set a new standard by becoming the first Razorback to throw for over 300 yards while rushing over 100 in a wild shoot out with two Rebel quarterbacks — Trinidad Chambliss and Austin Simmons.

Taylen Green earns second Razorbacker of the Week honor

Green threw for 305 yards and rushed for 111 punctuated by a touchdown in the air and on the ground. Only a late forced fumble by Ole Miss defenders from receiver Jalen Brown just outside the Ole Miss redzone with less than two minutes to play got in the way of what could have been a game-winning drive. Nonetheless, Green’s performance earned him Razorbacker of the Week honors for the second time in three outings so far this season.

“Over the years we’ve done a great job of making halftime adjustments on things defensively. So I had a lot of confidence we would figure something out because it wasn’t working the first half,” said Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin whose team stayed unbeaten while handing Arkansas their first loss by a 41-35 final score. “We obviously couldn't figure out the quarterback and him pulling. (Arkansas offensive coordinator) Coach (Bobby) Petrino does a great job too.  They paid a lot of money to coach over there as well. He's always done a good job of scheming people.”

Behind a rebuilt offensive line featuring tackles Corey Robinson and E'marion Harris, guards Fernando Carmona and Kobe Branham along with center Caden Kitler, Arkansas also rushed for 221 yards in the game. Mike Washington scored a pair of touchdowns — including a 47 yard run and sophomore Braylen Russell blasted in from three yards at the goal line.

The combination of Petrino and Green produced the second-most productive offense in the SEC in their first year together in 2024. So far in 2025, Green, who finished top five among SEC quarterbacks last season, has accounted for 886 yards passing and 11 touchdowns and a 182.7 quarterback rating. He’s also ran for over 100 yards twice this season while accumulating 307 total yards rushing and two more touchdowns.

“I’m just trusting the game plan, trusting Coach Petrino and the O line,” Green said. (They’re) doing a great job — wonderful job of communicating on the road in a hostile environment and just giving me time in the pocket.

“And, of course, they're run blocking, too, making holes. That's where it all starts, really: in the trenches. The receivers, running backs, and tight ends are doing a great job with the ball in their hands.”

In keeping with previous performances this season, Green distributed the ball to nine different receivers in the game. Senior wideout O’Mega Blake continued to lead the way with six catches for 81 yards and hauled in Green’s touchdown against Ole Miss. Brown was the next leading receiver with four catches for forty yards, but his fumble on Arkansas’ final possession was one of several miscues on defense and special teams which ultimately cost the Razorbacks the game.

“It definitely hurts and just with all the work that we did since Monday,” Green said. “But at the same time, you know, it's a team effort and it's a team loss. We're going to go back to the drawing board and see what we did well and continue to do that and see what we didn't do well and improve on that.

“(Brown) took it pretty hard, but at the same time, that shows how much he cares. If you see Jalen and how hard he works day in and day out and never complains, it means something to him. I had a couple words to him, but at the same time, it's a team effort. It's not just on him. I have to do better with my reads and getting people lined up quicker and just to execute too. Like I said, I'm proud of this team and proud of the defense and just giving us opportunity. Especially in the SEC, it's a four-quarter conference, and all the games are won in the fourth quarter, so we have to lock in and execute in the fourth quarter.”
