SEC Baseball Power Rankings: Week 13

Top five

LSU jumped up to No. 1 in our latest power rankings from No. 3, while Arkansas fell to No. 2 after both teams squared off in Baton Rouge, La., at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers had their midweek game against the Grambling State Tigers cancelled on Tuesday, while the Razorbacks rested up for the weekend.

LSU took the series opener in 10 innings on a walk-off RBI sacrifice fly by Ethan Frey to pick up a 5-4 win past midnight on Friday, going into Saturday. The Tigers took the series in run-rule fashion on Saturday in seven innings, 13-3, with the Hog pitching staff serving up at least one run in six of the seven innings played. Arkansas salvaged the series finale on Sunday with a gutsy 7-4 victory to avoid the sweep.

Texas fell down a spot to third place. The Longhorns began the week with a 9-3 midweek win on Tuesday over the Lamar Cardinals at home before welcoming the Florida Gators to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Florida took Friday’s series opener, 8-2, in a huge upset, but Texas evened up the series on Saturday, 5-2. The Gators took the series over the Longhorns on Sunday, 4-1, thanks to an elite pitching performance by their arms. Texas has now lost back-to-back conference series.

Vanderbilt and Tennessee swapped places at fourth and fifth, respectively, after facing off in Knoxville, TN., at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Volunteers took a 12-1 run-rule win on Tuesday over the Indiana State Sycamores at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, while the Commodores fell to the Louisville Cardinals the same day, 5-4, on the road at Jim Patterson Stadium. Tennessee secured the series opener on Saturday, 3-2, but Vanderbilt evened the series with a 10-6 victory on Saturday. The Commodores won Sunday’s rubber match, 7-5, to secure the series win.

Middle of the pack

Ole Miss remained in sixth place in the rankings but dropped two of three to Mississippi State on the road at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville, MS. Both teams opened up a doubleheader on Friday, with the Rebels taking the first game, 10-4, and the Bulldogs winning the second game, 4-1. Mississippi State pulled off the upset with a close 6-5 victory on Saturday to send Ole Miss back to Oxford, MS.

Alabama and Georgia swapped places at seventh and eighth, respectively, after facing off against each other over the week in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Bulldogs dominated the Crimson Tide in the series opener on Friday in run-rule fashion, 19-3. Saturday’s game was postponed to a doubleheader on Sunday. Alabama snatched the first game of the twin bill with a 9-3 victory and took the series in a shortened seven-inning contest, 5-4.

Auburn stayed in ninth place in the rankings after a strong week at home at Plainsman Park against South Carolina. The Tigers opened up the series on Thursday with a 24-2 routing over the Gamecocks in run-rule fashion before playing a doubleheader on Friday to finish up the series.

The first game of the twin bill featured a high-scoring affair where Auburn prevailed, 11-10, on a walk-off bunt single by Eric Guevara in the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers completed the sweep in the series finale with an 11-3 blowout to improve to 36-15 for the year while making a good case to be a regional host come tournament time.

Oklahoma remained in 10th place after getting swept on the road by Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., at Kentucky Proud Park. The Wildcats opened up the series by grinding out a 4-3 win on Friday and took the series on Saturday with an 8-5 victory. Kentucky completed the sweep on Sunday with a 7-2 victory for its biggest series win of the season. Despite being on a four-game losing streak, the Sooners still hold a strong record of 32-17.

Florida stayed at 11th after taking two out of three from Texas on the road in Austin, Texas, as previously mentioned. The Gators needed the series win after losing their midweek contest against the USF Bulls on Tuesday at home in Gainesville, Fla., 7-1, at Condron Family Ballpark.

Mississippi State jumped up a spot to 12th after taking two out of three from Ole Miss at home, as previously mentioned. The Bulldogs have improved to 31-20 on the year and are 6-1 since firing head coach Chris Lemonis.

Bottom of the barrel

Kentucky moved up one spot to 13th place after sweeping Oklahoma at home, as previously mentioned. The Wildcats are 28-20 but need a few more key victories to make a strong case for the NCAA tournament.

Texas A&M fell down two spots to 14th after getting shocked by Missouri over the weekend at home in College Station, Texas, at Blue Bell Park. The Aggies had their midweek game against the Houston Cougars cancelled on Tuesday due to inclement weather. Texas A&M had a 6-3 lead going into the top of the ninth inning of Friday’s series opener.

The Tigers rallied for six runs in the inning and blanked the Aggies in the bottom of the ninth to come away with a 9-6 win. Missouri took the series on Saturday with a 4-1 victory and completed the sweep on Sunday with a dominant 10-1 win. Texas A&M now has its postseason hopes in jeopardy with a record of 27-23.

South Carolina stayed at 15th in the rankings after getting swept by Auburn, as previously mentioned. The Gamecocks sit at a record of 26-26 and are currently looking at the outside of missing the NCAA tournament.

Missouri remains at the bottom of the list at 16th, but not after sweeping the Texas A&M Aggies over the weekend in one of the biggest upsets of the year. The Tigers have not only won their first conference games of the season but have also succeeded in taking their first series of the season. This was huge for Missouri after starting out the week with a rough 6-5 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks at home on Tuesday.
