SEC Baseball Power Rankings: Week three

Top 5

Tennessee, Arkansas and Florida remain as the top three teams in our power rankings. The Volunteers began the week with a 7-5 win over North Alabama on Tuesday and swept the competition in the Astros Foundation College Classic in Houston, Texas, at Dalkin Park. Tennessee won the opener over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Friday, 5-2, and blew out the Rice Owls on Saturday, 13-3. The Volunteers finished the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday to remain undefeated on the year at 11-0.

The Razorbacks began their 10-game homestand on Tuesday by run-ruling the Grambling Tigers out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, 14-3. The Razorbacks were in for a treat going into the weekend against Charlotte after falling behind 9-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning in Friday’s series opener. Arkansas stormed back with a 10-run rally and completed the comeback with solid pitching from the bullpen, 11-10. The Razorbacks and the 49ers were in a back-and-forth contest on Saturday, with the Hogs coming out victorious, 8-5, thanks to clutch hitting by Kuhio Aloy.

Arkansas completed the sweep on Sunday over Charlotte with a 4-3 victory. In yet another game with blows being exchanged, Logan Maxwell hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded and one out to lift the Hogs over the 49ers.

The Gators began their week with a 7-6 walk-off victory over North Florida in Gainesville, Fla. The Ospreys went into the bottom of the ninth inning down 6-2 before launching a four-run rally to tie the game. Florida loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, and Brendan Lawson scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. The Gators welcomed Miami (FL) to town at Condron Family Ballpark and took the first two games of the three-game series over their in-state rival. The Hurricanes salvaged Sunday’s game, 13-7, to hand Florida its first loss of the season.

Texas, Georgia, and LSU each moved up a spot, and Alabama moved up two on our list at fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively.

The Longhorns started off the week by blanking Incarnate Word on Tuesday, 6-0, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field before heading to the Las Vegas Classic. Texas swept the competition with an incredible 10-9 win over the Washington Huskies on Friday to begin the weekend. The Longhorns went on to top former Big 12 rival Texas Tech, 10-5, on Saturday and blew out Illinois on Sunday, 15-6, to win the Las Vegas Classic title. Texas has won nine games in a row since losing their first game of the season to Louisville.

The Bulldogs are now on a 10-game winning streak, but four of their five wins came in dramatic fashion. Georgia traveled to Atlanta, Ga., on Tuesday to take on in-state opponent Georgia State and sealed the victory, 7-3, thanks to some late inning rallies. The Bulldogs returned home to Foley Field for a four-game series against Florida Gulf Coast. Georgia won the series opener on Friday, 10-9, on a walk-off error. After the run ruling the Eagles in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Bulldogs had to walk it off again in the bottom of the 10th, 10-9, on an RBI single by Slate Alford.

Georgia was in another close one with FGCU in the series finale on Sunday. The Bulldogs stormed back down 3-0 and officially swept the series on a walk-off two-run homer by Ryan Black to complete the comeback, 4-3.

Middle of the pack

LSU opened up its week with a 13-3 run-rule win over Nicholls on Monday in Alex Box Stadium before heading to Arlington, Texas, on Wednesday at Globe Life Field against Dallas Baptist. The Tigers handled the Patriots, 7-3, and traveled a little further to Frisco, Texas, to compete in the Frisco College Baseball Classic at Riders Field. LSU won the opener on Friday in a back-and-forth 10-inning affair against Kansas State, 8-5. The Tigers completed the sweep of the competition with wins over Nebraska on Saturday and Sam Houston State on Sunday.

Alabama welcomed Jacksonville State on Tuesday to Sewell-Thomas Stadium and won an insane shootout, 20-11, to begin the week. The Crimson Tide went on to sweep a three-game weekend series against the North Dakota State Bisons to improve to an undefeated 12-0 on the year.

Oklahoma and Auburn both moved up three spots on our list to eighth and ninth, respectively. The Sooners swept a two-game midweek series over Texas Southern on Tuesday and Wednesday at home at L. Dale Mitchell Park and swept a three-game weekend series over CSUN to remain undefeated at 11-0. Oklahoma won the first two games of the series very convincingly but had to come back on Sunday to put away the Matadors, 3-2.

Vanderbilt fell down to 10th after a rough weekend in the Southern California College Baseball Classic. The Commodores started the week with a 16-3 run-rule win over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday at home and won the weekend opener over UCLA on Friday, 8-3, in Jackie Robinson Stadium. Vanderbilt struggled offensively to close out the invitational with a 3-1 loss to USC on Saturday and a 6-2 defeat to UConn on Sunday.

Texas A&M fell a long way from fourth to 11th place on our list after an abysmal week. The Aggies started out with a 7-3 upset loss to Texas State on Tuesday at home in Bryan-College Station that left the world of college baseball continuing to scratch their heads after their 3-2 loss to Cal Poly on Feb. 23.

Texas A&M lost the first two games of the Astros Foundation College Classic at Dalkin Park. Arizona pulled off the upset on Friday, 3-2, after scoring two runs in the top of the ninth to come from behind and shock the Aggies. Texas A&M was shut out by Oklahoma State on Saturday, 4-0, while committing four errors. The Aggies snapped their four-game losing streak with a 14-4 run-rule victory over the Rice Owls on Sunday but will undoubtedly fall hard from No. 1 in the national rankings.

South Carolina dropped down two spots to 12th place. The Gamecocks started the week well enough with a 14-4 run-rule victory over Gardner-Webb at home before traveling to Clemson, SC. South Carolina was swept in its three-game weekend series by its rival Clemson for its first trio of losses of the season. The first game was played in the Tigers' home ballpark at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, the second game was played in Greenville, SC., at Fluor Field, and the series finale was played at the Gamecocks' home field at Founders Park.

Bottom of the barrel

Kentucky and Ole Miss each moved up a spot in our ranking to 13th and 14th, respectively. The Wildcats destroyed Evansville on Tuesday, 24-3, in seven innings at Kentucky Proud Park and took care of business against Morehead State, 8-2, on Wednesday. Kentucky swept Hofstra in a three-game weekend series to finish at 5-0 on the week and 9-1 on the year. The Rebels powered through Southern Miss at home, 15-8, on Tuesday and swept Wright State in a three-game weekend series to level up to a 10-1 record.

Mississippi State fell down two rankings to 15th on our list. The Bulldogs suffered a 6-5 loss at home to No. 24 Troy out of the Sun Belt Conference on Tuesday night before heading into the Astros Foundation College Classic. After a convincing 14-3 run-rule victory over Rice on Friday, Mississippi State lost two close games to end the weekend. Arizona grinded out a 6-5 win on Friday, and Oklahoma State downed the Bulldogs on Sunday, 9-7, thanks to an early five-run rally in the bottom of the third.

Missouri remains at the bottom of the list with a 6-6 record. The Tigers started out the week with a shootout win against Lindenwood, 14-10, at home on Tuesday. Missouri stayed in the comfort of Taylor Stadium to begin a four-game series against Evansville. The Aces edged out the Tigers in the series opener on Friday, 7-6, but Missouri came back on Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader. Evansville won Sunday’s game, 9-5, to split the series while also stalling a late comeback attempt.
