The 2025 NCAA D-I baseball regular season has come to a close, with every team focusing its eyes on the postseason. Many teams around the Southeastern Conference are either solidifying themselves as regional hosts or fighting their way into the NCAA Tournament.
SEC Power Rankings: week 14
Top 5
LSU, Arkansas, Texas and Vanderbilt all stayed in the top four of the power rankings at first, second, third and fourth, respectively.
The Tigers traveled to Columbia, S.C., to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at Founders Park. LSU held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning on Thursday night. South Carolina scratched a run to cut the deficit to one on a solo shot by Kennedy Jones. KJ Scobey tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. The Gamecocks loaded up the bases and won the series opener on a wild pitch, 6-5. The walk-off loss fueled the Tigers into taking the series with an 8-1 win on Friday and a 7-3 victory on Saturday.
The Razorbacks welcomed the Tennessee Volunteers to Baum-Walker Stadium on Thursday night. In a gritty back-and-forth battle, Tennessee came away with the series-opening win, 10-7. Arkansas stormed back on Friday with an 8-6 win with solid pitching out of the bullpen. The Hogs took the series on Saturday, 8-4, with another solid performance by the arms and bats. The series win was much needed to solidify Arkansas as a Top-8 national seed.
The Longhorns face off against their longtime rival, the Oklahoma Sooners, in Norman, Okla., at L. Dale Mitchell Park to finish up the regular season. Texas snagged the first game of the series on Thursday, 7-4, while breaking a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth with a three-run rally.
The Longhorns held a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the eighth on Friday night. Oklahoma rallied with three runs to go on and take an 8-6 victory to even up the series. Texas took the series on Saturday with a 9-1 rout. The Longhorns took the SEC Regular Season championship with a conference record of 22-8 in their first year in the league.
The Commodores welcomed the Kentucky Wildcats to Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn., for a three-game series on Thursday. Vanderbilt was trailing, 7-5, going into the bottom of the ninth and Thursday’s series opener. With one out and runners on first and second, Braden Holcomb crushed a walk-off three-run home run to win it for the Commodores, 8-7.
Friday’s matchup was also a dogfight, with Vanderbilt holding a 7-5 lead going into the ninth. Kentucky rallied with a three-spot to take an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Commodores picked up a one-out double by Colin Barczi to put the tying run in scoring position. Jonathan Vastine walked it off with a two-run home run to lift Vanderbilt to a 9-8 victory and take the series. Vanderbilt completed the sweep on Saturday, 5-3, after scoring three in the bottom of the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh when it was trailing early, 3-0.
Georgia jumped up three spots in the rankings to fifth place. The Bulldogs welcomed the Texas A&M Aggies to Foley Field in Athens, Ga. Georgia outslugged Texas A&M in Thursday’s series opener, 10-6. The Aggies came back on Friday by shutting out the Bulldogs, 6-0. Georgia and Texas A&M finished the series on Saturday in a back-and-forth battle, with the Aggies trying to win the series to improve their postseason resume. The Bulldogs ultimately won, 7-5, to protect their status as a regional host for the NCAA Tournament.
Middle of the pack
Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama each dropped down one spot in the rankings to sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Volunteers dropped two out of three to the Arkansas Razorbacks over the weekend, as previously mentioned. Before that, Tennessee picked up a 9-4 midweek victory over the Belmont Bruins at home in Knoxville, Tenn., at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Rebels began the week with an 11-5 midweek win over the UT-Martin Skyhawks at home in Oxford, MS., at Swayze Field before welcoming the Auburn Tigers for a three-game series. Ole Miss smoked Auburn in Thursday night’s series opener, 9-2, and took the series on Friday in a 15-11 shootout victory. The Tigers salvaged the series finale on Saturday, 13-8, in comeback fashion to avoid the sweep.
The Crimson Tide traveled to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the Florida Gators for a three-game series at Condron Park. Florida took the series opener in an exciting 7-6 win, but Alabama evened the series on Friday with a 9-6 victory. The Gators took the series on Saturday with a 9-3 win to finish the year strong. Alabama will have to win a couple of games in the SEC Tournament to establish itself as a regional host.
Auburn remained at ninth after dropping two out of three to Ole Miss on the road, as previously mentioned. The Tigers did pick up a 19-1 run-rule midweek win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Tuesday at home at Plainsman Park.
Florida and Oklahoma switch places at 10th and 11th, respectively. The Gators took two out of three from the Alabama Crimson Tide over the weekend at home, as previously mentioned. The Sooners, on the other hand, dropped two out of three to the Texas Longhorns over the weekend, as previously mentioned.
Bottom of the barrel
Mississippi State, Kentucky and Texas A&M did not move up or down in the rankings while remaining at 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively. Both teams are most likely going to need some big wins in the SEC Tournament to reach the postseason.
The Bulldogs had their midweek game against the North Alabama Lions get canceled on Tuesday but rested up for a three-game series against the Missouri Tigers on the road at Taylor Stadium in Columbia, Mo. Mississippi State took the series opener in dominant fashion, 25-7, on Thursday night. This set the tone for the rest of the series, with Bulldogs run ruling Missouri in seven innings on Friday, 13-3, and Saturday, 12-1.
The Wildcats were swept by the Vanderbilt Commodores over the weekend, as previously mentioned, but did obtain a midweek victory on Tuesday with a 6-1 win over the Northern Kentucky Norse at home in Lexington, Ky., at Kentucky Proud Park.
The Aggies dropped two out of three to the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend, as previously mentioned. Texas A&M does have some key victories over some big names to make a case as a tournament team.
South Carolina stayed at 15th after dropping two out of three to LSU, as previously mentioned. The Gamecocks did pick up a 6-5 midweek win on Tuesday over the Winthrop Eagles at home in comeback style with a five-run rally in the bottom of the eighth. South Carolina is going to have to win the SEC Tournament for a chance to get in the NCAA Tournament.
Missouri remained at the bottom of the list at 16th after getting swept by Mississippi State, as previously mentioned.
The SEC Tournament begins on Tuesday at the Hoover Met in Hoover, Ala., with all 16 teams having the opportunity of winning the SEC championship and getting an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.
