With the No. 7 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings selected the best player in the draft, Darius Acuff Jr., the Arkansas basketball star guard. Although some front offices and others across the nation expressed concerns about Acuff Jr. defensively, his superior talent merited his selection before any of the previous six players picked. He certainly should have been the first guard selected.
Acuff Jr. explained that he thrives defensively when coaches allow him to guard the opposing team's point guard. Although his view that coaches should not ask him to guard any position other than the point guard position may sound problematic, especially given that many believe that a player, regardless of his status, should do what the coach requires him to do without any objections, his input matters, for he is keenly aware of what gives him the best opportunity to excel offensively and defensively.
Regardless of how anyone feels about him defensively, Acuff Jr. never cost the Arkansas Razorbacks a game because of his defensive performance, and his scoring prowess, ability to carry his team on his back, and make his teammates around him better merit selection above all of those in the current draft. Even though he was not drafted No. 1, the Arkansas basketball star point guard will use the six teams that failed to pick him as motivation to prove to everyone that he is the best player in the 2026 NBA Draft class.
Sacramento Kings select Arkansas basketball star Darius Acuff Jr.
Sacramento Kings fans should be thrilled that Darius Acuff Jr. was available at the No. 7 spot, allowing their team to pick the best player in the draft. He is the perfect fit for the Kings, as he can come in and provide immediate leadership and stability at the point guard position, and dramatically change what the team can do offensively. The Arkansas basketball star point guard can generate his own shot by either driving to the basket or shooting from the outside, including beyond the arc.
Last season under John Calipari's leadership for the Arkansas Razorbacks, Acuff Jr. averaged 23.5 points and 3.1 rebounds and shot 48.4% from the field, 44.0% from behind the arc, and 80.9% at the free-throw line. He accomplished such excellent offensive production in the face of a brutal SEC and a challenging non-conference schedule. Therefore, he was not simply generating such great numbers playing weak competition. He was doing it against some of the best competition in the nation.
Understanding this, one recognizes that he will be ready for NBA play on the first day of the regular season. In addition to his elite talent, especially offensively, he brings a winning confidence that will be infectious in Sacramento, and such bold confidence will not allow the team to have another season as awful as last season. The Kings have enough talent to make it to the playoffs, and Kings fans will not be foolish to believe that their team, with Darius Acuff Jr. running the point guard position, will make the playoffs next season.
