No. 22 Arkansas baseball run-rules No. 17 Ole Miss in dominant SEC statement win

No. 22 Arkansas baseball made a robust SEC statement in Baum-Walker Stadium, overpowering No. 17 Ole Miss 12-2 in a run-rule win that gave the Razorbacks a commanding start to the series.

Although No. 22 Arkansas baseball (31-16, 12-10 SEC) came into Game 1 of this series against the No. 17 Ole Miss Rebels (31-16, 11-11 SEC) not playing its best baseball, the Razorbacks proved what they can accomplish when they are metaphorically clicking on all cylinders. The Rebels came into the game with no momentum, having lost their series against the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (35-11, 16-6 SEC) and a midweek contest loss against the No. 10 Mississippi State Bulldogs (35-11, 13-9 SEC), resulting in a three-game losing streak.

Given this, the last thing Ole Miss needed to face was the roaring Arkansas Razorbacks' fans in the toughest place to play in college baseball, Baum-Walker Stadium. Even though it is difficult for any opposing team to leave Baum-Walker Stadium with a win on any day, it is especially challenging to leave with a victory on a Friday night, as the savvy Hogs fans recognize how significant an advantage their team will gain in the series with a win in Game 1 and how they have their best chance to win Game 1 with their ace on the mound, which Dave Van Horn almost always puts his ace on the mound on a Friday night.

As expected, Van Horn put his ace on the mound, Hunter Dietz. The Razorbacks seem to draw great energy from the fire and technical execution he can deliver. One must wonder, though, whether the Hogs played with extra motivation after hearing their head coach in the postgame conference of the Northwestern State 5-2 win, which was an uninspiring victory, to say the least, express a desire for them to play quality baseball more consistently, especially during this time of the season.

Arkansas baseball run-rules Ole Miss with Hunter Dietz on the mound

Although the Razorbacks hit four home runs in Game 1 of this series against Ole Miss, Hunter Dietz, who got the start on the mound for the Razorbacks, was the true hero. Dietz demonstrated against an authentically quality SEC opponent why he has a future in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is fearless on the mound. With his performance in Game 1, he became the first SEC pitcher this season to record 100 strikeouts.

With this win, Dietz moves to 6-2 on the season. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowed only one run and four hits, and had four walks and nine strikeouts. Without question, an excellent night on the bump. In the seventh inning, the final inning, Cooper Dossett entered to relieve him and surrendered only one run, two hits, and had two strikeouts. The Razorbacks' pitchers must set the tone on the mound each game, as Dietz did, to be successful.

Kuhio Aloy is emerging at the plate for the Razorbacks

As previously mentioned, the Hogs hit four homers in Game 1. TJ Pompey, Cam Kozeal, Kuhio Aloy, and Ryder Helfrick each had a home run. They brought the firepower at the plate that is often missing. Just as the pitching must be sound for the Hogs to be successful, they must be sound at the plate. Overall, the team had an impressive night at the plate.

No one, however, was more impressive than Kuhio Aloy at the plate. In four at-bats, he delivered three hits, one a homer, scored two runs, and had three RBIs. If Aloy continues his progression, Arkansas baseball can be dangerous in the postseason.

The Arkansas Razorbacks will go for the series win over the Ole Miss Rebels today in Baum-Walker Stadium at 2 p.m. CT. Fans unable to attend the game can watch it on the SEC Network+ (SECN+).
