Arkansas football’s momentum on the recruiting trail continues to build, and the Razorbacks may soon welcome one of Texas’ most productive running backs to campus.

Razorbacks Eye Top Texas Running Back Wayne Shanks Jr.

Wayne Shanks Jr., a standout 2027 recruit from The Kinkaid School in Houston, is emerging as a serious target for the Hogs after receiving an offer from Arkansas running backs coach David “YAC” Johnson. Since arriving in Fayetteville from Florida State this offseason, Johnson has wasted little time making his presence felt, aggressively pursuing SEC-caliber talent, and Shanks fits that mold perfectly.

The 5-foot-11, powerful runner plays for one of the premier programs in the Southwest Preparatory Conference and has built a strong relationship with Johnson dating back to his previous stop.

"“Coach YAC, he’s family,” Shanks told Arkansas Razorbacks On SI. “Anytime he comes by the school or we see each other, it’s always a good time.”"

That connection has played a major role in Shanks’ growing interest in Arkansas.

"“Him going from Florida State to Arkansas definitely made me interested in the Razorbacks,” Shanks said. “I do hope to get on campus in the spring.”"

The early buzz is well-earned. Shanks has compiled more than 3,300 total yards and 57 total touchdowns at the varsity level, production that’s hard for recruiting services to overlook. With another evaluation period approaching, a jump to four-star status could be on the horizon.

For head coach Ryan Silverfield and his staff, landing a back like Shanks would be a significant recruiting win, particularly pulling elite talent out of Texas beyond Arkansas’ traditional pipelines. It would also signal that Silverfield’s staff additions are already paying dividends on the trail.

The timing could work favorably for Shanks as well. With roster turnover always a factor through recruiting and the transfer portal, there’s a potential path to early playing time in Fayetteville, though that picture can evolve quickly.

Still, securing a spring visit would be a strong step forward. Bringing in high-level prospects like Shanks represents a return to the aggressive recruiting approach that once defined Arkansas football. Early success from Silverfield and his staff could go a long way toward energizing the fan base and reinforcing confidence that the program is moving in the right direction.
