As North Texas head coach Eric Morris continues gaining traction in the Arkansas coaching search, speculation is already swirling about what kind of talent he could bring with him if he makes the jump to a Power 4 program. Much of the conversation has centered around breakout quarterback Drew Mestemaker, and rightfully so, but there’s another Mean Green star who deserves just as much attention: wide receiver Wyatt Young, the explosive No. 1 target who just delivered one of the greatest single-game performances in the FBS for the 2025 season.
And if Morris, potentially joined by Mestemaker, heads to Fayetteville, Young might not be far behind.
A Record-Breaking Night That Announced a Star
The most impressive performance of the week, and arguably the season, belonged to Wyatt Young. The UNT receiver shattered the 2025 single-season FBS record with 295 receiving yards, surpassing TCU’s Eric McAlister’s 254-yard outing earlier this year. He also broke the all-time American Conference single-game record.
Just as remarkable: he did it on only eight receptions. Showing the explosiveness he has a playmaker on the outside.
Young opened the game with an electric 74-yard touchdown, then followed it with an 84-yard score on his second touch, both on deep balls from Mestemaker, who has leaned on Young as his go-to weapon all season. After the game, Young offered a humble reflection:
"“It’s a surreal feeling. I'm blessed to be in this position. Today, me and Drew were just clicking… We were tearing it up.”"Wyatt Young
His calm response matched the moment, a star who understands the spotlight without chasing it.
Not a One-Week Wonder
While the record-setting night turned national heads, Young’s production has been elite all season. Through 11 games, he’s totaled:
- 56 receptions
- 1,076 yards
- 19.2 yards per catch
- 10 touchdowns
He’s been Mestemaker’s top option, the offense’s engine on the perimeter, and one of the most dangerous deep threats in college football. With the transfer portal looming, that kind of production is going to draw massive attention from Power 4 programs who desperately need instant-impact playmakers.
Could Young Follow Morris?
Here’s where things get interesting: the chemistry between Morris, Mestemaker, and Young might become a package deal. If Morris takes a job like Arkansas, and if Mestemaker chooses to follow, the odds increase significantly that Young would join them. After all:
- He knows the system.
- He thrives in it.
- The QB-to-WR connection is already elite.
At a place like Arkansas, a program searching for firepower, identity, and skill-position stars, Young could step into immediate playing time on a massive stage in the SEC. And that possibility only adds to Morris’ appeal as a coaching candidate. He’s not just a coach, he may come with a built-in offensive core ready to compete right away.
A Star Finally Getting His Spotlight
Wyatt Young is the name not enough people are talking about but his historic explosion against Rice changed that. He’s no longer just Mestemaker’s favorite target. He’s a potential top-tier portal prize, a deep-threat weapon, and a rising star whose next move could reshape an entire offense.
And wherever Eric Morris lands, Young could be right behind him, ready to bring the fireworks to a bigger stage.
