SEC Baseball Power Rankings

Top five

Texas remains at No. 1 on our list after another successful week. The Longhorns began the week by winning a thriller on Tuesday against the Texas State Bobcats. Texas had to pull off a wild comeback and was heading to the top of the ninth inning down by one, 11-10. The Longhorns put up a four-spot and shut down the Bobcats from the bottom of the ninth to take a 14-11 win at Bobcat Park in San Marcos, Texas.

Texas went on to face its rival, Texas A&M, in a three-game series in a highly anticipated matchup. The Longhorns took the series opener on Friday, 2-1, and took the series on Saturday by grinding out a 3-2 win. Texas completed the sweep on Sunday with a gutsy 6-5 victory to send the Aggies packing back to College Station.

Arkansas remains in second place despite another rough weekend. The Razorbacks started the week strong by sweeping the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans in a two-game midweek series at Baum-Walker Stadium. The Hogs shut out both games with a 10-0 run-rule win on Tuesday and a 4-0 victory on Wednesday. Arkansas then traveled to Gainesville, Fla., to take on Florida in a much-needed bounce-back three-game series.

The Gators took the series opener on Friday, 6-4, despite a hot offensive start for the Hogs. The Razorbacks came back on Saturday and evened up the series with a 7-0 victory. Florida ultimately won the series on Sunday, 9-5, after scoring one or two runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings after trailing by three, 5-2. Arkansas has now lost three straight conference series and six of its last eight SEC games.

LSU and Tennessee swapped places at third and fourth, respectively, after facing each other over the weekend at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The Tigers were first upset by the Northwestern State Demons on Tuesday night in run-rule fashion, 13-3, in one of the most shocking defeats of the season. Meanwhile, the Volunteers enjoyed an 11-1 run-rule victory against the Lipscomb Bisons on Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Tennessee held a 3-0 lead over LSU in Friday’s series opener going into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Tigers rallied with three runs to tie the game. Jared Jones stepped up and hit a three-run home run to complete the comeback and give LSU the win, 6-3. The Volunteers came back on Saturday night with a 9-3 victory thanks to a six-run eighth-inning rally to pull away from the Tigers. LSU took the rubber match on Sunday in a dominant 12-2 run-rule win to take the series.

Ole Miss launched its way up two spots to fifth in our rankings after a solid week. The Rebels took on the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Tuesday for the annual Governor's Cup at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS. Mississippi State was ahead, 7-5, going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but Ole Miss rallied with two runs to tie the game thanks to a two-run homer by Austin Fawley.

Will Furniss walked it off in the bottom of the 10th with an RBI single to give the Rebels the win in 10 innings, 8-7. Ole Miss carried this momentum back to Swayze Field with back-to-back wins over Vanderbilt on Friday, 8-3, and Saturday, 7-1, to take the series. The Commodores salvaged the series finale on Sunday with a 13-0 run-rule victory.

Middle of the pack

Alabama jumped up three spots in our rankings to seventh place with a huge bounce-back performance. Missouri jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning in Thursday’s series opener.

Alabama answered back by stringing together some rallies, including a two-run home run by Will Hodo in the bottom of the second, a three-run bomb by Garrett Staton in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up, and a two-run blast off the bat of Coleman Mizell in the bottom of the eighth to complete the comeback. The Crimson Tide went on to take the series on Saturday with a 7-3 win and completed the sweep on Sunday with a 12-1 run-rule victory.

Georgia fell another two spots in the rankings to eighth. The Bulldogs got off on the wrong foot on Tuesday with a 3-0 shutout loss to the Clemson Tigers on the road at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Georgia went back home to Foley Field to welcome Oklahoma. The Bulldogs fell short in a late comeback attempt, 8-6, to drop the series opener to the Sooners. Georgia rallied back on Saturday with a thrill-packed 10-9 victory to even the series. The Bulldogs finished off with a 6-3 win over Oklahoma to take the series.

Auburn remained at ninth in our rankings. The Tigers grinded out a 1-0 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at home on Tuesday before welcoming the Mississippi State Bulldogs to Plainsman Park. Auburn secured the series opener on Friday with a 6-5 victory, but Mississippi State countered back on Saturday with a 12-7 victory to even the series, thanks to a couple of huge rallies early in the game. The Tigers nabbed the series on Sunday with a 14-8 win in a high-scoring affair to keep their hat in the ring as a potential regional host.

Oklahoma dropped two spots to 10th place after a rough week. The Sooners were upset by the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Tuesday, 5-3, at home at L. Dale Mitchell Park before dropping two out of three on the road to Georgia, as previously mentioned.
