Viral post on X shows BBN's obsession with John Calipari, Arkansas basketball
Arkansas basketball lost its best coach in three decades to the USC Trojans. But when you look at USC's social media page, you donβt see Arkansas fans in its mentions. When you search for the Trojans, you donβt see Hog fans constantly talking about Eric Musselman. So why do Kentucky fans care so much about John Calipari and Arkansas basketball?
Here's a fun experiment for any of you to try. After you read this, go to Razorbackers' Facebook page and scroll to any basketball-related post with more than 50 comments. Open them, choose ten people randomly, and check who their favorite teams are. About one-third to a half of the accounts commenting are Kentucky fans. There's only one word for it: obsession.
Yesterday, a Big Blue Nation fan account posted an obviously fake photo of the official Arkansas Men's Basketball account on X (formerly Twitter). The picture shows a post of Arkansas claiming Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, and Anthony Davis on the USA Olympic Men's Basketball team. Despite the pointed corners of the picture of the players and the practically impossible number of likes it earned in the short time it had supposedly been published, fans around the country fell for it, especially BBN fans.
The fake post itself isn't a problem. It's a joke illustrating that much of Coach Calipari's program has moved to Arkansas with him, and to share those with other college basketball fans is one of the best things about social media. The "Razorcats" memes are everywhere, and they're hilarious. The reaction is where things get weird.
BBN desperately wanted it to be true. They can't stand watching Arkansas with their former coach. Kentucky has a shiny, brand-new coach in Mark Pope, but they can't get over their EX. You can't even see Pope's name mentioned on social media without it being in the context of beating Cal in something. Unfortunately, it wasn't just Wildcat fans. The post went semi-viral and even made it to an account called RedditCFB with over 347k followers. That post alone had over 1.1 million impressions.
Here are just some of those reactions:
Nope, just never existed
The post apparently made this guy think he was psychic
You're right, something is sad about that post
Two out of three ain't bad
Put this in the dictionary next to the word "projection".
Reactions from other fanbases
Community Notes coming in clutch
But kudos to the account that posted it. What a great troll. Even if it was ultimately a self-troll. And to BBN, you're showing too much, but please keep coming back. Laughing at your obsession has been the highlight of the offseason. As Arkansas fans, we'd hate for it to end so quickly.
