SMU 1982, phantom PI call

SMU was dominating the Southwest Conference in 1982. Going into the game with Arkansas, the Mustangs were undefeated and No. 2 team in the country. The Hogs had only one loss and was jostling for position at the top of the SWC. A win would tie would put Arkansas in first above SMU.

The Razorbacks had them on the ropes late in the game, up by a touchdown. With four minutes left in the game, the Mustangs were driving down the field when quarterback Lance McIlhenny overthrew a ball down the left sideline. Nathan Jones beat SMU's Jacky Wilson down the sideline. Wilson then feel bringing Jones down backwards. For some reason, the refs threw a flag on Jones.

It gave SMU great field position and led to the game-tying score, ending the game 17-17. It was the only blemish on SMU's record and it was the probably lost them the chance at a national title, but it allowed them to win the SWC and make the Cotton Bowl.
