The Razorbacks’ schedule has been steeped in history, squaring off with Arkansas State for the first time, heading to Memphis for only the sixth matchup ever, and today, taking on the blue-blooded Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
With historic moments come vast uncertainties, so we went 'Behind Enemy Lines' with FanSided's Slap The Sign site expert, Oliver Vandervoort, to gain more insight on the Golden Doomers.
Arkansas football v. Notre Dame: Q&As with Irish writer
Q: When I think of Notre Dame, I think of a hard-nosed, punishing defense. However, over three games, the Irish have given up at least 330 yards and 27 points a game, including 30 to Purdue. What’s going on with the defensive side of the ball in South Bend?
A: The prevailing theory is that the players are confused by Ash's scheme. He's playing a lot of zone, and there have been several big holes in that zone.
Q: ND has two bona fide workhorses in Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price. What can Arkansas fans expect from those two and the Irish rushing attack?
A: They got more carries vs Purdue last week than they have all season. I expect the focus to be on the run game offensively for a while now. That also allows the Irish to control the clock more and keep the defense off the field as long as possible.
Q: Through four weeks, Arkansas’ offensive line is the highest-graded in the country, according to PFSN. The defensive line has struggled with depth so far. However, they lead the SEC in QB pressure. How do you think the trenches play out on Saturday?
A: Notre Dame has had a problem on the defensive front, but the o-line has been getting stronger as the season has gone on. I don't expect there to be much in the way of pressure for either defense.
Q: Taylen Green has been one of the more explosive players in college football. How does ND slow him down?
A: I legitimately don't have an answer for that one. It's the big worry.
Q: ND’s play-caller, CJ Carr, has also played well this season, putting up 737 yards through the air with five touchdowns. However, he’s turned the ball over once a game. On the flip side, Green has thrown four picks already this season. How much of a factor will turnovers be on Saturday? Do you think either defense has the upper hand to force those TOs?
A: If this were the Al Golden era, I'd say Notre Dame would get a few picks, but the defense hasn't been great in forcing turnovers. I do think Carr is getting better at limiting mistakes.
Q: Who are some Irish players that we haven't talked about that Arkansas fans need to know before Saturday's matchup?
A: Jordan Faison and Jaden Greathouse. If they each have big games, Arkansas is getting beaten badly. If they disappear (especially as Greathouse has done too often this year), then Arkansas rolls.
