With the postseason approaching, Meleek Thomas is peaking at exactly the right time for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The 6-foot-5, 185-pound freshman guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania earned his first SEC Freshman of the Week honor, stepping into the spotlight during a week when Arkansas was without its star backcourt partner, Darius Acuff Jr.. Acuff has collected the majority of the program’s freshman awards this season, but with him sidelined to rest an ankle before tournament play, Thomas seized the opportunity.

Meleek Thomas Named SEC Freshman of the Week

Thomas averaged 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in Arkansas victories over Texas and Missouri delivering one of the most impactful performances of his young career.

His biggest moment came on the road in Columbia. In Arkansas’ gritty overtime win against Missouri, Thomas tied his career high with 28 points, his best scoring performance in an SEC game. He also added seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, showcasing his all-around ability.

Thomas caught fire from beyond the arc early, knocking down his first five 3-point attempts and finishing 5-of-6 from deep. The freshman guard was particularly dominant after halftime, scoring 18 second-half points while shooting 5-of-10 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line.

The performance came during a milestone night for Arkansas head coach John Calipari, who secured his 900th career victory.

With Arkansas already locking up a top-four seed in the SEC standings heading into tournament week, the coaching staff chose to rest Acuff to ensure he’s fully healthy for the postseason run ahead. That decision created an opportunity, and Thomas made the most of it.

Once he found his rhythm from three, Missouri struggled to slow him down. His shot-making and composure helped guide Arkansas through a physical contest and ultimately into overtime, where the Razorbacks secured the win.

Thomas’ emergence couldn’t come at a better time for Arkansas. When Acuff returns to full strength, opposing defenses will face a much more difficult challenge. Instead of focusing on one primary scoring threat, teams will now have to account for multiple dynamic options in the Razorbacks’ backcourt.

For Thomas, the award is the latest milestone in what has already been a strong freshman campaign. He finished the regular season averaging 15.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 42.8 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three-point range.

As Arkansas heads into the SEC Tournament and prepares for the NCAA Tournament, Thomas’ recent breakout adds another layer of confidence for a Razorbacks team that appears to be hitting its stride at the right moment.

If his latest performance is any indication, Arkansas’ backcourt depth could become one of the most dangerous storylines of the postseas
