As the SEC Tournament approaches in Nashville, one storyline stands above the rest: just how big is the gap between the Florida Gators and the rest of the conference, especially the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Florida Gators Are the Overwhelming Favorites In the SEC
According to projections and analyst picks from CBS Sports, Florida enters the postseason as the overwhelming favorite to win the SEC Tournament. Among the panel of analysts, three selected Florida to win the tournament while two picked Alabama. Noticeably absent from the list: Arkansas.
That zero-vote tally for the Razorbacks is surprising considering many oddsmakers still place them second in championship odds behind Florida, with Alabama trailing close behind in third. Despite entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed, Arkansas continues to be viewed by many as one of the SEC’s most dangerous teams.
But the perception of the conference right now is clear: there is Florida. and then there is everyone else.
The Gators have done little to challenge that narrative. Florida enters the postseason riding an 11-game winning streak, playing arguably their best basketball of the season at exactly the right time. That run has positioned them for a likely No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament next week.
Momentum and history are also on the Gators’ side. Florida is looking to become the first repeat SEC Tournament champion since the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball accomplished the feat under John Calipari during the 2017–2018 stretch.
The biggest piece of evidence supporting Florida’s favoritism came earlier this season when the Gators dominated Arkansas by more than 30 points in their lone meeting.
In that matchup, Florida imposed its will physically. The Gators controlled the rebounding battle, overwhelmed Arkansas inside the paint, and dictated the game’s pace from start to finish.
That performance wasn’t an isolated statement either. Florida also handled Alabama convincingly, winning by more than 20 points, reinforcing the idea that the perceived gap between them and the rest of the SEC might actually be real.
Arkansas’ Opportunity
Still, tournament basketball thrives on motivation, and Arkansas suddenly has plenty of it. The Razorbacks enter the postseason with a clear chip on their shoulder, fueled by the memory of their earlier blowout loss to Florida and the growing perception that they sit a tier below the conference favorite.
Being left completely off the analyst championship picks only adds more fuel to the fire, giving Arkansas an opportunity to prove that the gap between them and Florida may not be as wide as many believe
Until someone knocks the Gators off, though, the conference still runs through Gainesville.
And if Arkansas wants to change that narrative, they may have to go through Florida to do it.
