As Arkansas begins evaluating potential candidates for its next football coach, one intriguing name to keep an eye on is Mike Norvell, currently at Florida State. With growing speculation placing Norvell on the hot seat in Tallahassee, his future could soon be uncertain and if he becomes available, his ties and background could make him an intriguing potential fit.
Arkansas Connections and Career Rise
Though born in Texas, Norvell’s connection to the state runs deep. He played wide receiver at Central Arkansas, where he also launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant. From there, his climb through the coaching ranks was quick, working under Gus Malzahn at Tulsa, then serving as offensive coordinator under Todd Graham at both Pittsburgh and Arizona State.
In 2015, Norvell was introduced as the 24th head coach of the Memphis Tigers, becoming the youngest FBS head coach in the nation at age 34. During his tenure, Memphis went 38–15, earning him a reputation for offensive creativity and program-building, qualities that caught the attention of Florida State.
Challenges and Outlook at Florida State
Since taking over the Seminoles, Norvell has experienced both success and struggle. Through five seasons, he holds a 37–32 overall record, but just 21–25 in conference play. After winning the ACC Championship in 2023, Florida State stumbled to a 2–10 finish last season, sparking speculation about his long-term future with the program. The noises have only grown louder with FSU 4-5 so far this season.
Despite the outside noise, Norvell continues to defend his team and process with passion. Following recent criticism, he delivered an impassioned six-minute defense of his program:
"“I'm fully aware the outside narrative around our team is not good, around me is probably not good. That's fine,” Norvell said. “That will not affect the job that I'm going to show up and do. I'm going to pour everything I have into this team with a championship expectation.”"Mike Norvell
His words, though bold, highlight his competitive fire and belief in his players, traits that could resonate in a high-pressure program like Arkansas and shows he doesn't run from the fire.
Why He Makes Sense for Arkansas
A return to Arkansas would be a homecoming of sorts for Norvell, bringing him back to where his playing carer happened and coaching career began. His proven ability to rebuild programs, along with his recruiting success and player relationships, make him a logical candidate if he becomes available. He has the experience at a top level program and he has the overall resume that would spark interest from other schools.
While there’s no confirmed interest from either side yet, Arkansas should at least make the call, if he does become available. Norvell remains well-respected across coaching circles, and a fresh start in familiar territory could be exactly what both sides need.
