The Oklahoma City Thunder’s early-season form is a reminder of why they hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy just a few months ago and one of the biggest reasons for their strong start is the emergence of Isaiah Joe.

After carving out a role as one of the league’s best pure shooters last season, Joe has taken his game to another level in 2025. Through the first stretch of the season, he’s averaging 16.6 points per game while shooting an impressive 44% from three-point range, both career highs. Despite continuing to come off the bench, Joe’s impact has been impossible to ignore.

A Sharpshooter in Rhythm

Oklahoma City struggled mightily from deep to open the year, hitting just 28.8% of their three-point attempts over the first five games. But since Joe returned to the lineup, the offense has found its rhythm. The Thunder have launched 45 threes per game over their last three outings, connecting on 40% of them being a dramatic turnaround that coincides directly with Joe’s return.

Head coach Mark Daigneault has praised Joe’s ability to fit seamlessly into the Thunder’s system, calling him “a dominant player in his role.” It’s not just his shooting that makes Joe invaluable, it’s his understanding of the game. He’s an excellent screener, thrives in transition, and consistently makes the right play to create open looks for teammates.

"“Isaiah doesn’t just hit shots,” Daigneault said. “He helps everyone else get easier ones.”"

A Star in a Supporting Role

It’s easy to imagine Joe starting for half the teams in the NBA, if not more. Yet, he’s fully embraced his off the bench role in Oklahoma City, leading the second unit with poise and confidence. His unselfishness and readiness embody the Thunder’s “next man up” mentality that’s become central to the team’s culture.

With key players still recovering from injury, Joe’s production has been vital. His shooting has not only opened up the floor for stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, but it’s also restored the offensive balance that made the Thunder so dangerous during their championship run.

Unlocking a New Level

This version of Isaiah Joe is exactly what the Thunder envisioned when they brought him in, a high-IQ, lights-out shooter who can change games without needing the ball in his hands. He’s helping Oklahoma City rediscover the offensive rhythm that powered them to the title and may be unlocking a new level of dominance in the process.

The Thunder’s depth has long been one of their greatest strengths, and Joe is the perfect example of why. Injuries may test the roster, but Oklahoma City continues to prove that no matter who’s in the lineup, someone is always ready to step up.

Isaiah Joe’s rise isn’t just a hot streak, it’s the reflection of a championship team’s culture and a sign that the Thunder might be even better prepared for another deep postseason run.
