When it comes to developing elite guards, few coaches in college basketball can match the résumé of John Calipari. Over the years, the veteran coach has mentored some of the game’s brightest young stars, including future NBA standouts like Derrick Rose and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Now, another freshman guard may be forcing his way into that conversation.

John Calipari Might Have His Best Freshman Yet

Darius Acuff Jr. has taken college basketball by storm in his first season with the Arkansas Razorbacks, and his production is already drawing eye-opening comparisons to some of Calipari’s most famous former players.

According to Gary Parrish of CBS Sports, Acuff’s freshman campaign stacks up favorably with the early college careers of Rose and Gilgeous-Alexander.

“John Calipari has coached some amazing guards, guys like Derrick Rose and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, two people who have been the NBA’s MVP, and Darius Acuff Jr. is having a better freshman season than either one of those players,” Parrish said. “He’s now averaging 22.2 points and 6.4 assists per game. Derrick Rose didn’t have those numbers, neither did SGA.”

For context, Rose averaged 14.9 points per game during his lone season for the Memphis Tigers under Calipari, while Gilgeous-Alexander posted 14.4 points per game during his freshman year at Kentucky.

Of course, scoring numbers alone are not the end-all metric when evaluating NBA prospects. Context, role, and long-term potential all factor heavily into how scouts project players at the next level. Still, the star power that Rose possessed during his prime and the MVP-caliber player Gilgeous-Alexander has become in the NBA inevitably shine a spotlight on Acuff and what his future could hold.

Unlike many elite prospects who enter the league primarily as high-upside projects, Acuff appears to offer a compelling blend of both potential and proven production. His ability to score at a high level while orchestrating the offense has been especially impressive given that he’s doing it within a system led by Calipari, a coach known for demanding discipline and structure from his guards.

The numbers Acuff is putting up this season, combined with the clear room he still has to grow, should have NBA teams paying very close attention. If his current trajectory continues, it’s easy to imagine him becoming a coveted prospect in the 2026 NBA Draft.

The buzz surrounding Acuff may have taken a little while to build nationally, but that hesitation appears to be gone. At this point, the hype train isn’t just rolling, it’s picking up speed across the entire country.
