Heading into the 2026 football season, few Arkansas Razorbacks have turned more heads than incoming transfer Chris Marshall. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver committed to the Hogs after totaling nearly 600 receiving yards for Boise State a year ago, and since then, he's shown why he was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school back in 2022.
Unfortunately for the Arkansas Razorbacks, their track record with 5-star recruits hasn't been particularly impressive over the past decade. Marshall's arrival won't erase Arkansas' recruiting drought, but if he becomes the Hogs' top target, he could show that the transfer portal offers a viable path around it.

Considering the Arkansas Razorbacks football program has endured some of its lowest moments since the firing of Bobby Petrino back in 2012, it shouldn't be too surprising that the Hogs have also seen a massive downturn in their recruiting performance during that same window. This includes an ongoing 10-year drought that has seen the team unable to sign a single 5-star recruit.
Since signing McTelvin Agim back in 2016, the Razorbacks haven't signed a single 5-star recruit out of high school. Even after expanding the scope to former 5-star recruits who transferred to Arkansas after stops at other schools, the Hogs have still seen only a tiny handful of former 5-star prospects -- including Drew Sanders (Alabama), Jadon Haselwood (Oklahoma), and Jaheim Singletary (Georgia) -- land in Fayetteville.
The results from that group have been mixed. Sanders became a unanimous All-American, while Haselwood caught 59 passes for 702 yards and three touchdowns in his lone season at Arkansas. Singletary, on the other hand, never fully realized his billing before transferring to Iowa State.
Now, Chris Marshall is joining that group.

Marshall was a consensus top-5 WR out of high school, but after receiving an indefinite suspension at Texas A&M and being dismissed from Ole Miss, he was forced to earn his way back into Division 1 football. The talented outside wide receiver would play for Kilgore College in 2023 before joining the Boise State Broncos for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, where he caught 30 passes for 574 yards and two touchdowns a year ago.
Marshall has carried that momentum into fall camp. He reportedly topped 130 receiving yards and scored in Arkansas' first scrimmage before catching a 68-yard touchdown from KJ Jackson in the second.
Chris Marshall has emerged as the clear favorite to win the starting X role opposite CJ Brown, while Marshall's defensive teammates have repeatedly praised him as well. Silverfield has told Marshall that he can be as good as any receiver in the country if he remains consistent. Safety Carter Stoutmire called Marshall "probably up there with some of the best" receivers he has seen, while Steven Soles said the wideout "just disappeared" while making a break during one of their matchups.
If he can realize his potential after a long, arduous journey around college football's varying levels, the newly crowned starting QB KJ Jackson may have a new favorite target by the time the Hogs take the field against North Alabama on September 5.
