Fan toxicity is a common theme in sports, and I'd argue it's one of the perks. It's a healthy-ish outlet to release built-up tension from our daily lives, but some fan bases can take it too far. And according to the Barstool Sports' podcast, Unnecessary Roughness, Arkansas is one of those fan bases.
Arkansas ranks No. in Barstool's top 10 most toxic fan bases
Let's go ahead and get the obvious out of the way. Any podcast, account, or blog associated with Barstool Sports calling anyone/anything else toxic is hypocrisy in the highest form—the epitome of the pot calling the kettle black. But it doesn't mean the list is wrong.
Arkansas has always had a highly passionate fan base, and at its fringes, it can be extremely toxic. From wearing neck braces for Bobby Petrino's return to Fayetteville in 2022 to literally setting fire to Brandon Allen's car, there's a wide range of how crazy the fan base can get. Taking into account its overwhelming presence on social media—affectionately dubbed Hog Twitter, it's a force to be reckoned with.
The problem with Arkansas' fan base is that when there's no one to attack during the dead periods of summer, they often turn on each other. There's even a term for it: Hog-on-Hog violence (also a term for Pro-Hogs vs other Pro-Hogs). Sometimes, it starts even earlier, as we saw earlier this week.
However, there's one problem with the list—Arkansas is way too low.
Given that two of the list's creators, Brandon Walker and Kayce Smith, absolutely hate Arkansas and its fan base, it's strange that Arkansas isn't higher than No. 8. For goodness' sake, South Carolina ranks ahead of Arkansas. To quote the 2013 film "The Wolf of Wall Street," Arkansas has "Gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers..."
In all seriousness, accounting for Arkansas basketball's struggles to fill Bud Walton with a brand new Hall of Fame coach leading the Hogs and the overall feeling on social media, is Arkansas' fan base losing its steam? The 'toxicity' comes from uncontrollable passion. And if the Razorback faithful aren't doing better than No. 9 on Barstool's stupid list, then maybe it's a sign that the passion is cooling off, even if it's still piping hot compared to most fan bases.
