The Arkansas Razorbacks just signed the No. 1 high school class in the country, but John Calipari's true recruiting gem may be just around the corner.
247Sports' No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class, Beckham Black, has made a name for himself over the past year, rapidly rising up the rankings after stepping out of his big brother and former Razorback Anthony Black's shadow. Now, the top player in the country is making it clear that he's ready to compete at the highest level by challenging one of the NBA's best defenders.

Earlier this week, Beckham Black competed against 2025-26 NBA All-Defensive Second Team guard Cason Wallace in a pickup game, and 247Sports' No. 1 recruit quickly demonstrated why he's such a tantalizing prospect for programs around the country.
Black went right at Wallace during their viral pickup run, showing little issue with getting to his spots in the midrange and at the rim. While some might argue that the OKC guard wasn't giving max effort, it's clear that Wallace wasn't trying to let Beckham Black score either.

Arkansas fans might not be familiar with the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class yet, but by this time next year, Beckham Black may very well be one of the highest-rated recruits in Arkansas basketball history. The Hogs are currently listed among the programs showing serious interest in the star point guard, and for what it's worth, Black was wearing Razorback red during his game with Wallace.
The younger brother of Anthony Black -- who played for the Razorbacks during the 2022-23 season before being drafted No. 6 overall by the Orlando Magic -- would give Arkansas a top-ranked guard in three consecutive recruiting classes, following 2025's No. 1 point guard Darius Acuff Jr. and 2026's No. 1 combo guard Jordan Smith Jr.
Black's rise reached a new level in the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup, during which he averaged 12.3 points, 8.3 assists, and 3.0 steals per game while helping the US team win the Gold Medal. Considering his recent display against Cason Wallace, his abilities as a primary ball handler could land him near the top of 2028 NBA Draft boards.
Black currently holds more than 20 scholarship offers from programs such as Duke, Kentucky, Texas, USC, and North Carolina, making his recruitment one of the most competitive battles in the 2027 cycle. His connection to Arkansas via Anthony Black gives Calipari a solid pitch (especially considering the coach's recent string of signing top high school guards), but it doesn't guarantee that Black will follow his brother to Fayetteville.
For now, Arkansas fans will have to sit back and wait as the 2027 cycle takes shape. However, if Beckham Black continues to develop this quickly, there's no telling how much he could cook defenders at the college level, making him one of the most important recruits on John Calipari's board.
