Former Arkansas ace Hagen Smith earns win in hitless MLB debut

At only 22 years old, former Arkansas baseball star Hagen Smith has officially arrived in the big leagues.

On Aug. 9, 2026, Hagen Smith made his MLB debut for the Chicago White Sox, and his first appearance was exactly what Hogs fans have come to expect from the dynamic lefty. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft struck out the side during his first inning of work before escaping a bases-loaded jam one inning later.

Hagen Smith throws two hitless innings, earns win in MLB Debut

Two years ago, Hagen Smith had one of the most impressive seasons on the mound in Arkansas Razorback history, earning SEC Pitcher of the Year and three National Pitcher of the Year awards in 2024 while posting a 2.04 ERA with 161 strikeouts across 16 starts. His 17.25 strikeouts per nine innings set an NCAA record, while his 360 career strikeouts remain the most in program history.

Less than two years after becoming the highest-drafted pitcher in Arkansas history, Hagen Smith has officially reached the majors.

Smith wasn't originally expected to pitch so early for the White Sox in Sunday's game. However, a two-hour, 23-minute rain delay following the first inning ended starting pitcher Davis Martin's afternoon and forced Chicago to turn to its bullpen.

Smith tossed two full innings in his debut appearance for the Chicago White Sox, allowing zero hits and zero runs while giving out four walks and tallying three strikeouts against their AL Central rival, the Cleveland Guardians.

The rookie left-hander was even credited with the win after Chicago scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, which moved the White Sox to a division-best 61-56 on the year. With 45 games left in the regular season, Smith could become an important option for the White Sox bullpen as they pursue their first postseason appearance since 2021. Chicago currently leads the AL Central by 3.5 games.

To be fair, Hagen Smith needed 48 pitches to complete two innings and only tallied 25 strikes, with his four walks producing a 2.00 WHIP despite not allowing a hit. His ability to escape a third-inning jam showed why Chicago believes in his elite arsenal, but his command will determine how much the White Sox can rely on him moving forward.

Hagen Smith's rapid ascent shouldn't come as a surprise. Expectations were high for the No. 5 overall pick, and his performance with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights regularly showcased the same overwhelming potential that made him a star in Fayetteville.

Smith earned White Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors in April after posting a 2.20 ERA with 25 strikeouts across 16.1 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a .158 batting average. By the time Chicago promoted him, MLB Pipeline ranked Smith as the organization's No. 2 prospect and the No. 51 overall prospect in baseball.

Smith's on-the-mound performance has to feel good for the White Sox, who have seen a long list of quality pitchers such as Dylan Cease, Michael Kopech, Garrett Crochet and Carlos Rodón leave South Side over the past few years.

Hopefully, Smith can become the exception to that frustrating trend.
