Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. has put together a season that Razorback fans won’t soon
forget. The freshman standout added two more major accolades to his growing list of
accomplishments, being named the SEC Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year.

The Freshman of the Year honor came as little surprise. Acuff dominated the conference
throughout the season, earning a record eight SEC Freshman of the Week selections, the
most ever recorded in conference history. From the moment he stepped onto the floor, Acuff
proved he was one of the most electrifying young guards in college basketball.

The bigger talking point, however, was the SEC Player of the Year award. While some debate
surrounded the selection, Acuff’s production ultimately made the case undeniable. His impact
went far beyond freshman excellence; he was simply one of the best players in the conference
regardless of class.

With the sweep of both awards, Acuff joins an extremely exclusive group. He becomes just the
third player in SEC history to win both SEC Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year in
the same season. The only others to accomplish the feat were Anthony Davis during the
2011–12 season with Kentucky and Brandon Miller during the 2022–23 season with Alabama.

That company speaks volumes. Both Davis and Miller were stars who carried their teams
throughout their respective seasons before becoming high selections in the NBA Draft. If Acuff’s
trajectory continues on its current path, his future could follow a very similar route. The honors may not stop there.

Acuff is also a top-five finalist for the prestigious Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the
nation’s best point guard. He is competing alongside an impressive group that includes Jaden
Bradley of the Arizona Wildcats, Jeremy Fears Jr. from the Michigan State Spartans, Kingston
Flemings of the Houston Cougars, and last but not least Braden Smith from the Purdue
Boilermakers.

It has been a special season for Acuff, but his story is far from finished. With postseason play
still ahead, the freshman guard has more opportunities to leave his mark not only on this year’s
team but on the history of Arkansas basketball.

More accolades could certainly be on the horizon, whether Acuff is chasing them or not. But the
biggest prize remains the one every team is pursuing, a national championship. And if Arkansas
is going to make that run, their electrifying freshman guard will almost certainly be at the center
of it.
