The Arkansas basketball team is officially ready to launch its four-game preseason trip to Nassau's Baha Mar Hoops Summer League, but unfortunately for one star player, he won't be able to lace up his Razorback sneakers.
Miikka Muurinen not cleared to play in Bahamas
According to Arkansas Razorbacks head coach John Calipari, five-star recruit Miikka Muurinen will not be able to participate in the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League this weekend. The delay in his playing stems from the NCAA working on clearing his eligibility.
Calipari's confirmation follows an earlier report from HawgBeat, which stated that Muurinen's absence is not injury-related. Instead, the Finnish forward is completing the standard eligibility process associated with his previous experience playing professionally in Europe.
Muurinen's lack of availability shouldn't be too concerning for Arkansas fans, as eligibility reviews are common for international players transitioning from European professional organizations to college basketball (and, according to Calipari, the process has been taking longer than normal this year). Still, his absence is a bit of a downer considering how unique a skill set he brings to the team.
The 6-foot-11 forward spent last season with KK Partizan in Serbia, appearing in 14 games between the ABA League and EuroLeague. Before that, he played high school basketball at Sunrise Christian Academy and AZ Compass Prep, giving him an unusual combination of American prep experience and professional competition.

With Trevon Brazile finally headed to the NBA after four seasons with the Arkansas Razorbacks, Miikka Muurninen is supposed to be the Hogs' replacement at the power forward position this year. With his massive frame and polished three-point shot, John Calipari's squad is going to rely on the Finnish freshman heavily this year, which is why it's extra disappointing that he won't be making the trip to Nassau.
Luckily for the Arkansas Razorbacks, they certainly aren't lacking in size. Cooper Bowser, Caleb Ourigou, Maper Maker, Ilia Frolov, and Paulo Semedo are all legit centers, so Calipari should be able to field plenty of serviceable lineups during the Baha Mars Hoops Summer League even without Muurinen dressing out.
Ourigou reclassified from the 2027 recruiting cycle to join the Hogs for this season, while Maker and Frolov bring international experience of their own. If one of them emerges as a dependable option beside Furman transfer Cooper Bowser, Muurinen's temporary absence could ultimately help Calipari develop a deeper rotation. Add in the fact that Abdou Toure, JJ Andrews, and Billy Richmond III can likely play the 4 in small-ball lineups, and the Razorbacks should manage just fine in their first preseason matchup.
Arkansas will begin its four-game exhibition schedule against the Bahamas National Team at 6 p.m. CT on Friday. The Razorbacks will then face defending Canadian national champion Carleton University, Colombian professional champion Toros del Valle, and the University of Calgary. All games will be streamed on Twitch and FloCollege.
