For the first game of the season, the Razorbacks gave its fans a present, with extra baseball as Arkansas beat Washington State 2-1 in game one of today's doubleheader.
The Hogs had trouble connecting with the ball in game one, with the first seven batters retiring order. It wasn't until catcher Ryder Helfrick got the ball rolling in the third inning with a bunt — a welcomed sight to see after the Razorbacks' power-hitting approach fell flat last season.
However, thanks to Gabe Gaeckle and the cold weather, the Cougars hit equally as bad. Gaeckle pitched five innings, striking out seven batters and giving up only one hit and a walk. The only run Washington State managed to score in regulation came in the sixth inning against Will McEntire, with a home run to right field. It was for naught, as the Hogs countered in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back base-bits and a sacrifice fly that brought Charles Davalan home.
When the game went to the tenth inning, Arkansas gave up another run on an error by Helfrick, but an amazing double-play by Wehiwa Aloy kept the Cougars to only one run. The Hogs battled back with small-ball, forcing three consecutive walks while trying to bunt. After the bags were loaded, Helfrick made it home on a wild pitch. Then, the Australian transfer, Brent Iredale, hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in his first outing as a Razorback. It was the first time Arkansas led the entire game.
The Hogs will be back on the diamond shortly, but here's how you can watch game 2:
