With the SEC Tournament officially underway, the chaos of March is already beginning to take shape. The first round tipped off last night, and as history has shown, anything can happen once postseason basketball begins.
Teams can fade at the wrong time, catch fire unexpectedly, or dominate the way many predicted all along. That unpredictability is exactly what makes conference tournaments so important when it comes to NCAA Tournament positioning.
Arkansas enters the SEC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, earning the luxury of a double-bye and the opportunity to rest while other teams battle their way through the early rounds. Whether that extended rest proves beneficial or disruptive remains to be seen.
Here are three SEC teams that could emerge as dangerous dark horses.
Kentucky Wildcats
One of the most intriguing storylines in the tournament involves the Kentucky Wildcats, and the added narrative of facing the program once led by John Calipari.
Kentucky survived its opening matchup and now faces a feisty Missouri Tigers squad that pushed the Arkansas Razorbacks to overtime in the regular-season finale.
Whether Arkansas had a full roster in that game or not, Missouri proved it can compete with anyone. If Kentucky can get past the Tigers and then pull off a massive upset against the top-seeded Florida Gators, the Wildcats could suddenly find themselves riding serious momentum.
A deep run from Kentucky would send a clear message to the selection committee and potentially push Arkansas down the seeding ladder if the Razorbacks stumble. The Wildcats have the talent to get hot at the right time, and with critics doubting them throughout the season, they’ll certainly have motivation.
Texas A&M Aggies
The Texas A&M Aggies represent perhaps the most direct threat to Arkansas’ tournament hopes.
Texas A&M first has to get through the Oklahoma Sooners, but if the Aggies advance, they would set up a matchup with Arkansas in the next round.
That game alone could dramatically change the SEC Tournament landscape.
If Texas A&M were to upset Arkansas, the Aggies would instantly become one of the hottest teams in the conference. Not only would that shake up the SEC bracket, but it could also create major momentum heading into the NCAA Tournament.
A strong run from Texas A&M, especially one that includes knocking off Arkansas, could elevate the Aggies while simultaneously damaging the Razorbacks’ seeding outlook.
Georgia Bulldogs
The Georgia Bulldogs enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed, but they have already shown they’re capable of beating Arkansas.
Earlier this season, Georgia delivered a convincing 90–76 victory over the Razorbacks, a result that still carries weight when evaluating postseason matchups.
As a mid-seed, Georgia is exactly the type of team that can spark an unexpected tournament run. If the Bulldogs string together a few wins and build momentum, they could quickly turn into one of the most dangerous teams in the bracket.
And if Arkansas were to stumble while Georgia continues advancing, the Bulldogs could potentially jump the Razorbacks in the postseason conversation.
