Isaiah Joe named to the 2020 Jerry West Award watch list
Arkansas’ sophomore shooting guard Isaiah Joe was named to the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list on Tuesday afternoon. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame made the announcement.
The award recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I basketball and was named after Jerry West, a Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four MVP. This will be the sixth year for the award to be presented.
Joe connected on 113 3-pointers for Arkansas last season, and set multiple records including the most made 3-pointers in school history, and the freshman record for 3-pointers made per game (3.32). As a first year Hog, Joe also tied the SEC record for 3-pointers made by a freshman, and currently ranks 4th in NCAA history for the most 3-pointers made by a freshman. The slick shooter was one of only seven players in the NCAA to drain at least 110 3-pointers and still shoot a minimum of 41% from beyond the arch.
Along with Joe, six other SEC players made the 20-player watch list including Anthony Edwards (Georgia), Tyrese Maxey (Kentucky), Sylar Mays (LSU), Breein Tyree (Ole Miss), A.J. Lawson (South Carolina), and Jordan Bowden (Tennessee).
The seven SEC athletes join Kamar Baldwin (Butler), Jarron Cumberland (Cincinnati), Ty-Shon Alexander (Creighton), Kellan Grady (Davidson), Antoine Davis (Detroit Mercy), Trent Frazier (Illinois), Joe Weiskamp (Iowa), Joshua Langford (Michigan State), Temple “T.J.” Gibbs (Notre Dame), Myles Powell (Seton Hall), Mustapha Heron (St. John’s), Desmond Bane (TCU), and Sam Merrill (Utah State) on the overall list.
Arkansas fans will be able to vote for Joe this season using Fan Voting by Dell Technologies in all three rounds of the process. Fans can begin voting on Friday, October 18. To vote visit hoophallawards.com.
In February the list of 20 players will be cut down to 10, before the five finalists are selected in the month of March. The winner of the 2020 Jerry West award will be presented in Los Angeles, California on Friday, April 10, 2020, at the College Basketball Awards ceremony.
