Arkansas Survives Against Ole Miss To Advance
Arkansas barely hangs on to win 73-72 against Ole Miss in their first game of the SEC Tournament.
The Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team don’t replicate how they beat Ole Miss earlier in the season but they do find a way to win. The Hogs survived to go on to the semi-finals with their 73-72 victory.
As the game got going, it was clear this would be a fast paced game. What happened, however, wasn’t what fans and analysts were thinking would happen. It was the pace Arkansas wanted, but Ole Miss showed that they could hang in the fast lane.
One scary stat from this game was the rebounds. Arkansas flat out got dominated in this aspect with the Rebels getting 49 to the Razorbacks’ 39. During the game, I must say, it felt like Ole Miss had about two to the Hogs 1.
Ole Miss Coach Andy Kennedy At The Half
"“I think all the talking heads were talking about on the podium that this game’s gonna come down to Moses Kingsley and Sebastian Saiz. Guess what. Moses Kingsley kicked his ass in the first half.” Andy Kennedy"
Sebastian Saiz, also known as Mr. Double-Double, was shut down in his ability to score but made up for it in his uncanny ability to come down with rebounds. Saiz had only nine points, but a huge seventeen rebounds for the night.
Although Saiz wasn’t a huge factor in the Rebel’s scoring, Terence Davis most definitely was. Davis almost pulled off the double-double tonight with 26 points and 9 rebounds. He also led the Rebs in assists with 4.
On the flip side, leading scorer of the night for Arkansas, Daryl Macon put up 17 points for the Razorbacks. It may not have been his 30 points he had against the Rebels earlier in the year but it was enough to survive.
Only two other Razorbacks found a way to score double-digit points. Both Barford and Hannahs had 13 points for the night. The stat that saved Arkansas was the blocks by Kingsley. It seemed like all 4 of his blocks were at absolute critical moments, especially his last blocks against Saiz.
So was it pretty? Not at all but in the words of basketball coaching legend Jimmy Valvano, they survived and advanced. Arkansas now looks ahead to Vanderbilt in the semi-finals tomorrow. Woo pig.
