120 Decibels or Stay Home
By Peter Morgan
Have you ever wanted to be a part of something great? Something that you can talk about to the grandkids? Something that makes the pages of Wikipedia Razorback History? Saturday, 08 October 2016 may be your chance.
120 Decibels is the goal for Donald W Reynolds Razorback Stadium Saturday as the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide make their way into Fayetteville to take on the #16 Arkansas Razorbacks. Anywhere from 72,000 to 80,000 screaming fans will be onsite to witness what many hope will be an upset. The HOGS hope that the crowd will be a huge factor. Furthermore, ArkansasRazorbacks.com sent out an article asking for the deafening level mentioned above.
What is the equivalent for 120 decibels? Some say close up sandblasting or an extremely loud rock concert. Other studies have even stated that it’s the same as a nearby thunderclap. Meanwhile, additional sources compare it to operating a chainsaw or oxygen torch. Whatever the best example, science has proven that pain begins at or around said 120 decibels.
Can it be done? My guess is yes. Razorback fans have already broken the 110-decibel threshold on more than one occasion with a lesser amount of fans. The above-mentioned article has some great sound stats and even compares how 68,000 in DWR rivals over 102,000 in Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium. Also, mix this in the fact that it is Alabama and the Pigscreen will no doubt show the noise meter to add to the hype. In other words, bring your earmuffs, HOGS fans.
