4) The time when Matt Jones led the Razorbacks to a huge victory over hated rival Texas… Arkansas vs. #6 Texas, 2003, (Arkansas wins 38-28)

Everyone knows the meaning and history of the Arkansas-Texas series. From “The Game of the Century” to the the 1964 game, there have been many historic and memorable games throughout this rivalry. This classic from 2003 is right up there at the top for Hog fans. Not given much a chance, the Razorbacks came into this game with everything to gain and nothing to lose. This game was more than just a big victory for the Razorbacks. It cemented the legacy of Hogs legend in Matt Jones. Of all the big time performances by Jones, this one is the biggest in my opinion.

His performance that afternoon was nothing less than stellar. For the game, Jones was 8 of 16 passing for 139 yards and 1 touchdown. The difference was Jones’ rushing ability, going for 124 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Were these the best numbers of Jones’ career in Fayeteville? Far from it. The two 7 overtime games would have been obvious choices for this list if it was strictly about stats.

The history between these two programs amplifies the importance of this game. The Hogs scored a huge victory over a top 10 opponent on the road that just so happened to be our oldest rival. And we got the win on the back of a QB that ran all over the field, and made huge play after huge play. This started a great 4 game stretch where the Razorbacks beat Texas and then beat Alabama, both on the road in hostile environments. In 2003, the Razorbacks finished 9-4 and beat Missouri in the Independence Bowl. Regardless of the outcome of the season, 2003 was the best year for Jones as the Hogs QB, both in terms of stats and big wins.
