Week 11 in the SEC brought few major injuries throughout the conference leading the big story of week 12 in the SEC about what happened in week 11 when then No. 1 Alabama fell at home to then No. 15 Texas A&M 29-24.
Now that Alabama is on the outside of the BCS national championship game and looking to get back in, the bigger question is not will an SEC team lose in the national championship game but will an SEC team even make it to the title game. With three unbeaten teams in front of Alabama, and Georgia, both programs have to hope that two schools, especially Notre Dame, for either team to have a crack at a BCS title game invite.
No. 2 Oregon has the toughest road going forward. This weekend they travel to Stanford then finish the regular season against Oregon State in the Civil War before a possible showdown against UCLA or USC in the Pac-12 title game.
Notre Dame only has one team left to worry about and that is USC. USC can put up points on any team in the nation; their problem is stopping their opponents. Notre Dame is known more for their defense than their offense making this a great match-up to end the season with a huge upset in the making.
Kansas State gets a test this weekend against Baylor then follows up with Texas. Both clubs can score points which should put some scare into die-hard Wildcats fans.
Georgia ends their season against lowly Georgia Tech (5-5). Any other year this rivalry game could put a kink in the Bulldogs’ plans but 2012 does not look to be one of those years.
Alabama finishes against Auburn in the Iron Bowl before facing Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. The winner of the SEC Championship Game will have a legitimate gripe over KSU and Notre Dame having to play an extra game and against a Top Five opponent a task that Kansas State and Notre Dame do not have to accomplish.
On paper only three SEC games in week 12 are of some interest. Arkansas tries to fight for bowl eligibility against Mississippi State while MSU tries to stop a three game losing skid.
Mississippi could put a cherry on their turn-around season with a long shot win in Death Valley against LSU.
The final game of interest is Tennessee at Vanderbilt. Vols head coach Derek Dooley is on the fence of getting run out of town. A loss to Vandy would push the fans and administration over their three-year Dooley limit and cause Tennessee to miss a bowl game for the second consecutive year. A must win game for Dooley and company.
