2012 College Football: SEC Injury Updates Week Eight

The SEC escaped week seven without many major injuries but teams like South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida are starting to show the strain of playing weekly in-conference games. This is the time of the year when quality recruiting over previous seasons turns into quality depth on the field.

Last week Kentucky caught Arkansas on their upswing, good for the Razorbacks bad for the Wildcats. Kentucky is too banged up to put up much of a fight against any SEC team much less against the Razorbacks when quarterback Tyler Wilson is firing on all cylinders.

Alabama may face their first semi-tough test of the season this weekend against Tennessee. If the Vols home crowd stays in the game, the Tennessee passing attack could cause problems for the Bama defense.

Bama has been lucky this year missing out on playing Missouri and Arkansas without their starting quarterbacks. Chances are the final outcome would not have changed but the points on the scoreboard and challenges the defense would have face certainly made a difference.

South Carolina took a tough loss on the road to LSU and now face an even tougher test on the road against No. 3 Florida. The Gators limp back home after a solid win against Vanderbilt only to face a dangerous Gamecocks team… or do they?

USC is hurting on both sides of the ball after the physical game against LSU last weekend. Not only is defensive end Jadeveon Clowney limping around on an injured foot but running back Marcus Lattimore is not expected to start. This places more of the emphasis of the offense on quarterback Connor Shaw, tough times for Gamecock fans.

LSU gets a change of pace in offensive styles from South Carolina’s grind it out offense to A&M’s wide open passing offense. This week will be the Aggies’ first real taste of elite SEC football. Good thing for A&M they get the Tigers at home.

MSU gets a tough draw against Middle Tennessee State. MTS will not sneak up on anyone after upsetting Georgia Tech earlier in the season. Another gift for MSU is MTS’ top running back is out making life much easier in Starkville this weekend.

The bye could not come at a better time for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Next week against Ole Miss every able body that can return should return including preseason All-SEC tight end Chris Gragg. Gragg creates matchup problems for any defensive coordinator and his absence since Sept. 22 has been felt on the field for Arkansas.
