NCAA Baseball: Golden Spikes List Picks 16 SEC Players including Ryne Stanek

The 2012 Golden Spikes Award has published their midseason 60-man watch list naming Arkansas Razorback pitcher Ryne Stanek among those in consideration for the top college baseball player of the 2012 season.

The Golden Spikes midseason list is an update of the players that are on the selection committee’s radar based on performance to date. College baseball players not currently listed have until May 29, to play their way onto the final 30-man semifinalist grouping.

The 2011 semifinalists included seven SEC players- D.J. Baxendale, Arkansas, Mike Zunino, Florida, Grayson Garvin, Vanderbilt, Sonny Gray, Vanderbilt, Mikie Mahtook, LSU, Michael Roth, South Carolina, and Victor Roache, Georgia.

The Golden Spike list currently has 16 SEC players in consideration, the most of any conference. Florida catcher Mike Zunino and South Carolina pitcher Michael Roth are the only 2012 players also listed in 2011.

Texas pitcher Taylor Jungmann and Virginia pitcher Danny Hultzen were two of the three finalists named to last year’s Gold Spike Award list before UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer took home the hardware in 2011.

Hultzen was selected No. 2 overall in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, Jungmann was taken with the No. 12 pick by the Milwaukee Brewers, and Bauer was the third overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

College baseball fans will get a chance to have their vote heard starting May 29, when the final 30 players are made public. Fans will get to choose three of the semifinalists when voting online at GoldenSpikesAward.com.

Major League Baseball will host the award show at the MLB Network Studios on July 6.
