Arkansas Razorbacks 50 – Mississippi State Bulldogs 51

The Arkansas Razorbacks lost a heartbreaker at home to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday night, 50-51. Brandon Allen proved why some say he’s the best QB in the SEC, throwing for 7 touchdowns, over 400 yards, and no picks. He has officially passed Ryan Mallett for most career touchdowns, and is having one of the best seasons for a QB in Arkansas history.

Dak Prescott had himself a night as well, throwing for 500 yards and 5 scores, along with 1 interception. He also added 2 scores on the ground with 46 yards rushing. Prescott showed why a lot of people think that HE is the best QB in the SEC. And just like before the game, the numbers compared to Allen match up like this: Dak gets more yards and rushes, Allen gets throws more scores and is more accurate. It was truly the QB showdown that it was billed up to be.

It was also a depressing display of defense from both teams. When you combine rushing and passing yards by both teams, there was almost 1100 yards of offense of the night. The Arkansas defense made some big plays and forced a couple of turnovers in the 3rd quarter, but they were unable to keep MSU out of the endzone on their game winning drive.

To top it all off, the Hogs lost on a blocked field goal. A brilliant drive by Allen got the Hogs within field goal range, and the Razorbacks decided to run the ball instead of pass, settling for the easy FG and a 2 point lead. It forced MSU to burn all their timeouts, and probably would have worked out if not for the fact that Arkansas hasn’t had a kicking game worth a pile of crap since Zack Hocker was here. The kick was blocked, and that was that. Fans are being fairly critical of the decision to take the game out of Allen’s hands, but honestly, if the kick hadn’t of been blocked then it would have probably worked out for Arkansas. But it was blocked, and the blame for the late game playcalling is justified, and falls on Bielema and Enos.

Players of the Game

  • Brandon Allen – 30/43 passing, 406 yards, 7 touchdowns, no interceptions. He also made a great catch on a 2 point conversion trick play. The Senior QB is turning heads with his performance down the stretch. He’ll be first team All-SEC in my heart, at least.
  • Hunter Henry – The best receiving tight end in the country put on a demo reel for the NFL scouts tonight. 7 receptions, 129 yards, and 2 scores. Henry showed out tonight against a talented MSU linebacking corp.
  • Drew Morgan – 7 catches, 84 yards, and a touchdown. Morgan has been playing injured all season long, and it sent him to the locker room for a while. His grit and resolve have turned him into not only a leader for the Hogs, but a statistical leader in the conference as well.

Also, shout out to Jeremy Sprinkle with 3 touchdown catches. Only 47 yards receiving for the big man, but he made them count!

Highlights and Tweets of the Night

The Arkansas Razorbacks played their butts off, and you should be proud of them. I never thought I’d say this, but we’re going to have to figure out a way to beat both Alabama and Mississippi State. They’re just proving to be too much for this staff.

The Hogs have to shake it off and get ready for a Missouri team that has a lot to play for next week. The Hogs fall to 6-5 overall, and a win against the Tigers would keep the Hogs out of Birmingham for their bowl game. Which would be huge. Have you ever been to Birmingham? *shudders*
