College Baseball: Arkansas opens up weekend series with Georgia

Fayetteville, Ark. – The Razorbacks look to keep their steady bats rolling into the weekend as they open up a three-game series with the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens.

The Hogs enter the series with a 27-15 overall record and a No.15 national ranking. They are 11-7 in conference play and currently in second place behind LSU in the SEC Western Division.

In their series vs. Texas A&M last weekend, the Razorbacks hit .323 at the plate and are batting .269 for the year. Sophomore Brian Anderson leads the team with a .317 batting average. Anderson also has two home runs and 25 RBI.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Spoon has a .306 batting average. Spoon has three homers and leads the team in RBI with 38. Sophomore Joe Serrano is hitting .308 with one home run and 13 RBI, while Senior Matt Vinson is hitting .301 and has one homer and 19 RBI.

Statistically, Arkansas has the best pitching staff in baseball. They lead the country with a team ERA of 1.81. They also lead the nation in hits allowed per nine innings with 6.36.

Junior right hander pitcher Barrett Astin will start in the series opener Friday for the Razorbacks. In eight starts this season, Astin has a 2-2 record with a 2.34 ERA in 12 appearances.

Another junior righty, Ryne Stanek, is projected to start Saturday’s game. Stanek has started 10 games this season for the Hogs and is 5-2 with an ERA of 1.63.

In SEC play, Stanek has a 4-1 record and leads the conference with a 0.70 ERA. Senior lefty Randall Fant will likely take the mound for the final game of the series on Sunday. Fant has a record of 3-1 with a 2.23 ERA in eight starts.

The Razorbacks’ bullpen has compiled a 9-5 record with 11 saves and a 1.38 ERA. Sophomore Jalen Beeks has a 4-1 record with two saves and a 1.86 ERA. Junior Colby Suggs leads the team in saves with five.  

Georgia enters the weekend series with a 16-26 overall record. The Bulldogs are 4-14 in conference play. They are currently seventh in the SEC Eastern Division. Georgia has been red-hot lately, winning four of its last six games and crushing No. 19 Georgia Tech 17-0 on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs are batting .278 on the year. Curt Powell leads the team in hitting with .378 and 20 RBI. As for their pitching staff, Georgia has a team ERA of 4.52.

Arkansas won the series with Georgia last year, taking two of three games at Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks have won six of the last 10 games vs. the Bulldogs.
