Who needs sportsmanship during the World Baseball Classic? Such was the question after a benches clearing brawl took place between Canada and Mexico on Saturday.
The fight happened after Canada’s catcher Chris Robinson laid down a bunt with his team up 9-3 in the ninth inning. Mexico’s third baseman Luis Cruz fielded the bunt and motioned to pitcher Arnold Leon to hit the next batter, Rene Tosoni… and he did.
The fight ended with seven players being ejected and the largely pro-Mexican crowd at Chase Field in Scottsdale, Arizona, took matters into their own hands by throwing objects onto the field and fights breaking out in the stands.
In regular baseball play, MLB, college, or otherwise, the bunt being laid down while up six would be a no-no. But in the WBC runs scored can play into a team’s possible elimination thus a smart play by Robinson as Canada ended up tacking on another run in the ninth. Mexico, facing elimination, took offense to the situation perhaps wrongly.
Lost in the scuffle was a 10-3 win by Canada. Team Canada (1-1) will face Team U.S.A. (0-1) on Sunday.
