Fayetteville, Ark. – Call it the MVP award or Heisman Trophy Award for best Track & Field athlete in the nation, however one views the honor Makeba Alcide is among 10 other finalist for the 2013 Bowerman award.
The Bowerman award was started in 2009 to honor the top female and male Track & Field athletes in college sports. As of Friday Alcide was among those garnering serious attention to be named the most outstanding in her field.
Alcide caught the attention of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) after scoring the fourth highest pentathlon score in women’s college Track & Field history. She posted a score of 4,464 at the Razorback Invitational outdistancing herself from the competition by over 250 points.
Among her accomplishment this year includes the third best high jump score in the nation at 6-2 ¼. She won the pentathlon at the SEC Championships at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She has secured two second-team All-American honors in the NCAA Outdoor Championships and in the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Alcide has competition within her own conference from LSU’s Kimberlyn Duncan, the Bowerman winner in 2012. Duncan is an explosive runner in the 200 and 60 meters.
