Fayetteville, Ark. – On Wednesday Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema announced former University of Tennessee offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will take over the same role for the Razorbacks.
Chaney comes to Arkansas with 27 years of coaching experience. After four years as the Vols’ offensive coordinator and with three years of NFL experience with the St. Louis Rams, Chaney’s next role is to keep Arkansas’ high-powered offense running for years to come.
A Missouri native, Chaney played nose tackle for Central Missouri in college (1980-83) before starting his coaching career at Cal State Fullerton as an assistant (1985-1992). After three more seasons at Wyoming he took his spread style offense to Purdue (1997-2005) becoming one of the most highly thought of offensive minds in college football.
Chaney was a hold over from Lane Kiffin’s staff when Derek Dooley was hired in 2010 but while at Tennessee he led one of the more potent passing attacks in the SEC.
Razorback fans worried about a run-heavy only offense seen with Bielema’s Wisconsin teams can breathe a little easier with the hiring of Chaney. Chaney has a reputation for developing quarterbacks, including Drew Brees and Tyler Bray. One can assume that Chaney’s philosophy coupled with his SEC experience is why Bielema hired him as his offensive coordinator.
In 2012 Bray broke Tennessee’s single-game record for passing yards in a game against Troy totaling 530 yards with five touchdowns. Bray’s passing yards against Troy was the second-highest single game total in SEC history.
Under Chaney’s guidance Bray led the SEC in passing yards (3,612) and touchdowns (34) while only being sacked eight times.
Chaney’s hybrid pro-style spread-attack gained ground after one year as tight ends coach and two as the St. Louis Rams offensive line coach before he left to become the offensive coordinator at Tennessee.
Bielema has secured his second coach with a track record of being a recruiting coordinator. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash served as lead recruiter at San Diego State and Iowa State before going to Wisconsin. Chaney has served as recruiting coordinator at Cal State Fullerton, Wyoming, and Purdue.
