HogManInLA’s Top 25 College Football Poll: Week 15

The 2012 college football season is completed and Championship Week did not disappoint. All that is left is handing out bowl invitations to all the worthy teams that made it to the finish line.

Any shift in the college football landscape over the weekend would have to start with Alabama vs. Georgia, no such luck for wishful Florida or Oregon.

No. 2 Alabama held on to beat then No. 3 Georgia 32-28 for a shot to defend their 2011 BCS National Championship in Miami against undefeated Notre Dame.

Alabama got their ground game working against the Bulldogs with Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon both rushing for over 150 yards in the win. Lacy posted 181 yards with two scores and Yeldon 153 with one touchdown. And the rest as they say is history.

Perhaps the biggest shock of the 2012 college football season is two teams will receive BCS bowl berths that were unranked at the time of earning the honor. Wisconsin blew out No. 12 Nebraska 70-31 and Louisville took down Big East rival Rutgers 20-17 on Thursday.

Another out of nowhere contender for a BCS bowl game will be Northern Illinois. The No. 21 Huskies beat No. 17 Kent State 44-37 in double-overtime. NIU has to hope voters place them in the AP Top 16 for the right to play, my guess, in the Orange Bowl. If this happens Oklahoma gets knocked down a notch to a non-BCS bowl more than likely playing in the Cotton Bowl against Georgia or LSU.

Oklahoma needed Kansas State to lose to Texas for the outright conference title and a surefire BCS bowl game. No such luck. Texas folded in Manhattan 42-24 giving the Wildcats the Fiesta Bowl honors.

Everyone has to eat crow every now and again. I posted my preseason Top 25 poll so you, the readers, can see how well or how poorly I did picking how the college football hierarchy would play out.

The Arkansas Razorbacks sent shockwaves throughout college football with their loss in week two. Michigan could not fully recover from their week one loss to Alabama, although each one of their losses was a “good” to “decent” loss at season’s end.

USC crumbled under the direction of Lane Kiffin. Kiffin has job hopped around avoiding critics, the media, and opposing coaches catching on to his style of play. Now, it appears, Kiffin will have to face the music and that music is a loud screeching noise made possible by horrible play calling and poor defense.

Had Nebraska not been blown out by Wisconsin to end the season I would have had eight of the top 15 teams in the nation guessed correctly. West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Michigan State disappointed beyond belief in 2012.

Thanks for following my HogManInLA Top 25 poll for the regular season. We’ll see if the bowl action will align my preseason picks any better with the final polls.
