Friday the Lady Razorback gymnastics team posted an overall score of 197.15 to finish third behind defending national champions Alabama and No. 1 Florida to advance to the Super Six of NCAA Gymnastics Championship for the first time since 2009.
The Razorbacks have made it to the NCAA Championships for the sixth time in the program’s 10-year history including five straight appearances. Arkansas finished second to UCLA in their NCAA regional in Fayetteville, Ark. when they posted a team score of 196.825 to advance to the championship.
Arkansas entered the championship ranked No. 8 in the nation after finishing sixth in the SEC Championship. The Hogs closed the season with a team record of 15-3, 3-3 in the SEC.
Senior Jamie Pisani, the 2012 SEC Gymnast of the Year, tied for first on the beam (9.95) and first on the floor (9.90). She also finished third in the all-around with a score of 39.625.
The Razorback team score of 197.15 was the second highest score in the program’s young history and only the third time Arkansas has scored over 197 points in a meet.
Saturday’s Super Six will be an all Pac-12 versus SEC showdown. Arkansas, Alabama, and Florida will represent the SEC while UCLA, Utah, and Stanford will try to advance for the Pac-12.
Georgia, Oregon State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, LSU, and Ohio State were eliminated from the semifinals on Friday.
The top three teams from the morning sessions will compete in the finals at 3 p.m. CST on Saturday.
NCAA Gymnastics Championship Notes
In 2011 Alabama won the NCAA Gymnastics Championship with an overall score of 197.650. UCLA finished second with a score of 197.375 after winning the event in 2010.
Georgia and Alabama have a combined 15 NCAA Championships in Gymnastics out of the 30 year history of the sport.
Arkansas finished fifth in the 2009 Super Six.
The NCAA Championships are being held at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia.
